It seems to me would could come to a compromise that everyone could live with.
Create a new Federal standard for a license to buy/own/carry guns. In exchange, close the gun show loophole, but otherwise leave current purchasing laws mostly intact.

To get the Federal license, you'd have to qualify with education, training, and a good background check--similar to standards for becoming a police officer. Once you're licensed, no waiting period, no limits. Like a driver's license, you'd have to periodically re-qualify.

With this in place, I think there'd be stronger arguments for unlicensed people to face tougher background checks and waiting periods, and limits on numbers of guns, types of guns, high-capacity clips, and ammo.

I used to be strongly anti-gun. I've come to believe there are plenty of people who can safely own and carry guns, but too many people who simply pose a danger to the rest of us. Separate these groups, and adjust laws for them respectively.

The laws are already tough enough. One should note that criminals do not obey the law. Those of us who do are simply punished for being nice.

People who want to harm others will find a way to do so.
  • pamela 2012/08/09 18:44:46
    Not that likely
Probably not. It makes no difference if hand gun laws would be tougher or not, because this only does 2 things.
    1. Makes it more difficult for good reliable people to purchase one for their own protection and the families and personal belongings.
    2. Will make it easier for criminals to invade, knowing that some will not have any protection, against their intentions.

America would NOT be safer... but Criminals would be... and terrorists would be... and any country that wants to try a hostile take-over would be!

    But America would NOT be!

Let's start with making murder, armed robbery, assault and make it illegal for a criminal to own one... o wait those laws already exist and the people who break those laws don't seem to care.

What kind of question is this? Hell No having Guns ,a right given to us in the 2nd amendment , is what has kept us safe for all these years Grant the british got stupid in 1812 and we handed them their limey ass on a platter zand then the friggin japs got stupid in 41 and we should have finished them when we had the chance and Yes The great muslim ass hit us on 911, but eventually That jackass got it! Take away the guns and we have no defense Not even from our corupt government of which Obama is trying to take as we speak
  • 912er 2012/08/09 02:47:10
Especially if you are a criminal. Knowing that you are the only one armed with a weapon, it will be so much easier to "spread the wealth" from those you are robbing to yourself.

Handguns are more dangerous than assault rifles, and hangunds don't apply to the second amendment. I would prefer to have a rifle than a handgun anyday. Keep your guns in your homes people! The NRA still has an iron grip on this country so I doubt my plan will ever come into place.
  • FUS RO ... OGMGS1 2012/08/09 04:11:32
How is a handgun more dangerous than an assault rifle?

Numbers don't count. They're made up by dead people. How's this one. Gun death in US 8,775 not counting suicides I don't think, over 11,000 w/ suicides. Afghanistan, 209 Americans. Now tell me. where's the war? Or, if we don't call it a war, do the casualties still count?
  • moomoof 2012/08/09 01:36:53

We don't supply much enforcement for the laws we have. Most of the offenders have a lengthy rap sheet.

    Consider the following case: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

Two guys were out on early parole. They invaded a home, raped and killed three women, tried to burn the house down, and were caught at the scene by police.

People like this don't give a hoot about gun control laws. How concerned should they be? Both murderers were already in jail for other crimes and the system let them go early.

Preventing crime by using gun control is about as effective as preventing drunk driving by taking away cars from sober people.
  • smilinbobs 2012/08/09 00:56:48
Gun laws just make is so that law abiding citizens don't have hand guns only the criminals will have them. I don't see how that makes it a safer place. If you want to accomplish that goal you have to punish those who use a gun to commit crimes. Mandatory sentences and death penalties for murder convictions. Law abiding citizens with hand guns are no safety concern at all. Guns are not good or evil they are just tools, evil people are the problem lets deal with them in a serious way and the problems will be few

But the N.E. have the toughest and the lowest death rate. However they fail to have an "Evil Person/Helluva Guy" on the permits. Dreadful oversight.
  • smilinbobs bob h. 2012/08/09 12:32:35
Your data is flawed I live in rural NY it is easy to get a permit to carry a hand gun. In NYC, Rochester. or Buffalo it is much more difficult to get a permit to carry a handgun yet the murder rates are much higher in those areas. Your data doesn't work sir but good try

This is a very tough issue and needs to be addressed. If we look at the Swiss they have some of the toughest laws on guns while 4 million of the population own at least one firearm. Given the stats that 0.52 homicides per 100,000 people is staggering. And they listed 40 gun homicides in the year 2010.

Now factor they have a population of nearly 7 million people so why is it their laws work? The government has very strict bylaws on how much ammo they can buy and do random home inspections to make sure they comply with it.

Now this does NOT take away their rights to have guns as so many on the right and the NRA want you to believe but rather balance the scales so that everyone who wants a firearm can be protected.

Imagine if the places where these massacres happened if at least one person carried a sidearm? There has to be some reasonable thoughts to this rather than the "my right to bear arms to defend the militia." or "take away all the guns and we will have better and safer places."
