Since its inception in 1953, every new president has attended The Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball – until now.

The ball was created for President Dwight Eisenhower's inauguration to honor recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award. The event is sponsored by the American Legion and co-sponsored by 13 other veteran's service organizations, including the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

And while 48 of the nation's 99 living recipients of the Medal of Honor attended the event, newly sworn-in President Barack Obama became the first president in 56 years to skip out on the ceremony.

President Barack Obama would rather vacation in Chicago on this Memorial Day and insults veterans by skipping the traditional ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery.

Vice President Joe Biden will stand in for the President at the wreath-laying ceremony while Obama will put in an appearance at Illinois’s Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

The snub is not sitting well with some vets.

Barack Obama is turning his back on the Vietnam veterans of Rolling Thunder who will gathering in Washington, D.C. this Memorial Day weekend for their 23rd annual demonstration to remind the nation of those servicemembers still missing or held as prisoners of war.

In addition to skipping out on his duties at Arlington National Cemetery so he can vacation at the family mansion in Chicago, Obama will be cancelling what, under President George W. Bush, had become a traditional meeting at the White House between Rolling Thunder and the administration.

A coalition of military groups is planning a nationally televised town-hall-style meeting with the presidential candidates near Fort Hood, Tex., the largest active-duty military installation in the country. But so far, only Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican nominee, has agreed to attend.CBS has agreed to broadcast the meeting live from 9 to 11 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, Aug. 11. The candidates would face questions directly from an audience of 6,000 people, made up of veterans, service members and military families from the base.

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has not agreed to participate.

It seems that the current American President has officially snubbed the women of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (The DAR) at their yearly convention in Washington, D.C., appropriately named “Continental Congress.” Tradionally, American Presidents send greetings to the respected, non-political woman’s organization, either in person or via written or video address. This year, 2009, the stunned audience of descendants of Revolutionary War Patriots sat in silence awaiting a message from their President, for whom many of the women had voted.

IN WAKE OF DISASTER, OBAMA SNUBS
FORT HOOD SOLDIER WITH PTSD
Fort Hood (TX) After one of the worst on-base massacres in U.S. history and the day before Veteran’s Day, President Barack Obama visited soldiers at one of the barracks at Fort Hood, only to ignore a soldier that stated that he had concerns he’d like the president to address.

SPC Michael Kern, a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) and an active-duty soldier battling with post-traumatic stress disorder handed the president a letter and stated “Sir, IVAW has some concerns we'd like for you to address." Mr. Obama then dropped his hand and went on to speak to the next soldier. The secret service took possession of Kern's letter. In contrast to the president’s public statements, this simple act brings to light the true lack of concern and respect for individuals in the military, particularly those struggling to deal with post-traumatic stress.
