Woman Sits Next To Corpse On Long-Haul Flight After Fellow Passenger Dies. SHOULD SHE HAVE GOTTEN ALL, HALF OR NONE OF HER MONEY REFUNDED?

A Swedish woman was forced to sit next to the dead body of a man who passed away mid-flight on a Kenya Airways service from Amsterdam to Tanzania. Lena Pettersson, a reporter for Sveriges Radio (SR), noticed the man sitting in the aisle directly opposite her was feeling unwell not long after she boarded the flight at Amsterdam's Schipol Airport. She told SR, "He was sweating and was having convulsions," adding that flight attendants were present but the plane took off all the same.

When the passenger plane was airborne, cabin crew put out a call for medical assistance and the man, thought to have been in his 30's, was given cardiac massage. However, he died a few hours later, leaving Lena to sit next to his corpse for almost five hours. Pettersson explained that staff seemed baffled by what to do, so they wrapped him in blankets and laid him out on the row over three seats.

Later, Pettersson said, "Of course it was unpleasant, but I am not a person who makes a fuss." But, when she got home after her holiday, she decided to seek compensation from the airline. Petterson was refunded 5000 kronor (about £450), which amounted to half the cost of her ticket. She said, "This feels much better. It is reasonable."

SHOULD SHE HAVE GOTTEN ALL, HALF OR NONE OF HER MONEY REFUNDED?

What was her idea - open a door and throw the dead person out? Cram him in one of the bathrooms?? she did not sit next to the body, it was across the aisle - big damn deal

I agree. It would be terribly disconcerting (to say the least!) to have to sit next to a stiff for five hours straight on an airplane. Thanks for your response, TheCouchF*cker!

Well, they were happy to give her half and she was happy to take it, so I have no objections. It was across the aisle at least, and only five hours.

I would have said that this woman should have received NO REFUND, except for the fact that this man exhibited signs of serious illness BEFORE the plane even took off. Actually, this guy's family would probably have reason to sue the airline for not seeking medical attention for him by calling an ambulance while the plane was still on the ground. Even though this lady didn't get all her money refunded, it still had to be pretty creep sitting next to a dead dude on a long flight. Ewww.

I think it's fine, that the airline gave her some of her money back, because that is what businesses often do, with a disgruntled customer.
What is disturbing to ME, is that the plane wasn't stopped from taking off, if a man was clearly in distress, as in sweating and having convulsions. He needed emergency care, evidently, and possibly died as a result of not getting it.

I wonder why the plane took off in the first place, too. My brother-in-law was on a plane bound for Russia, and before take-off, he began having a mild heart attack. The flight was stopped until an ambulance came to take him to the hospital. IMO, the airline should have given this lady ALL of her money back! Thanks for your comments, Piperpc!

I have no problem, with her getting her money back, really. I don't necessarily think she is somehow entitled to get her money back, though, unless she tried to alert the staff about what was going with that poor man, and they ignored her.

Evidently, the flight attendants WERE aware of the fact that this man was exhibiting signs of being seriously ill, but the plane took off anyway. Perhaps they didn't alert the pilot about this problem. Actually, if the airline had waited for an ambulance to come and take this guy to the hospital, then none of this would have happened in the first place. I'm guessing that the dead dude's family will sue over this, and THEY have a good case, much better than the woman who sat next to his body for five hours.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If anyone has some kind of case against the airline, it is those who loved the poor guy who died. I'm not a fan of 'frivolous' lawsuits, to say the least. If the man was clearly having signs of physical distress, the attendants should have stopped everything, and called an ambulance. He might not have died, if they'd done that. We'll never know, because they didn't.

But if there were another seat available, One would think they would move her to a place where she was more comfortable. I however would have stayed with him so he was not alone. I know he was dead but he died without loved ones etc.

This guy was only in his mid-30's, and he was exhibiting symptoms of serious illness before the plane even took off. Perhaps his life could have been saved if the airline had called and waited for an ambulance to come and take him to the hospital, instead of calling for medical help once the plane was in the air. Just a thought... Thanks for your response, Cal!

Yeah, but where in the article did it say the airline was aware of the medical problem. Airline stewards are not telepathic. The woman sitting next to him, who probably gave the account to the news, was responsible to tell someone...not ignore it. Perhaps his life could have been saved if she cared, and perhaps she wouldn't have sat next to a corpse either.

The article states, "'He was sweating and was having convulsions,' adding that flight attendants were present but the plane took off all the same." Therefore, the flight attendants DID know that this man was obviously VERY ill. Perhaps they didn't notify the pilots in the cockpit as to what was happening in the passenger cabin. Still, the plane should have NEVER taken off with a seriously sick person on the flight. To ask for medical attention after the plane was in the air was akin to closing the barn door after the horse is gone. I smell a lawsuit...

I smell a judge throwing it out of the court circuit as frivolous myself. I think we're assuming without the details. You don't need caps. I've seen more people die then you will ever. Be thankful for this.

I don't think it would be a frivolous lawsuit if this man's family sued the airlines. They failed to get medical attention for an obviously seriously ill man before the plane took off. I'm just offering an opinion, too, because I don't pretend to know all the details either. Is seeing more dead people than I supposed to be some kind of boast? Rather you than me, for sure.

It says in the article she wasn't a person to make a fuss, but evidently she did...I'm sure there were other people on the flight that had to sit in close proximity to the dead guy, did they all get a refund? I doubt it...
