Okla. Woman Shoots, Kills Intruder: 911 Operators Say It's OK to ShootBy KEVIN DOLAK and RYAN OWENSJanuary 25, 2012A young Oklahoma mother shot and killed an intruder to protect her 3-month-old baby on New Year's Eve, less than a week after the baby's father died of cancer.Sarah McKinley says that a week earlier a man named Justin Martin dropped by on the day of her husband's funeral, claiming that he was a neighbor who wanted to say hello. The 18-year-old Oklahoma City area woman did not let him into her home that day.On New Year's Eve Martin returned with another man, Dustin Stewart, and this time was armed with a 12-inch hunting knife. The two soon began trying to break into McKinley's home.As one of the men was going from door to door outside her home trying to gain entry, McKinley called 911 and grabbed her 12-gauge shotgun.McKinley told ABC News Oklahoma City affiliate KOCO that she quickly got her 12 gauge, went into her bedroom and got a pistol, put the bottle in the baby's mouth and called 911."I've got two guns in my hand -- is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?" the young mother asked the 911 dispatcher. "I'm here by myself with my infant baby, can I please get a dispatcher out here immediately?"The 911 dispatcher confirmed with McKinley that the doors to her home were locked as she asked again if it was okay to shoot the intruder if he were to come through her door."I can't tell you that you can do that but you do what you have to do to protect your baby," the dispatcher told her. McKinley was on the phone with 911 for a total of 21 minutes. When Martin kicked in the door and came after her with the knife, the teen mom shot and killed the 24-year-old. Police are calling the shooting justified."You're allowed to shoot an unauthorized person that is in your home. The law provides you the remedy, and sanctions the use of deadly force," Det. Dan Huff of the Blanchard police said.Stewart soon turned himself in to police.McKinley said that she was at home alone with her newborn that night because her husband just died of cancer on Christmas Day."I wouldn't have done it, but it was my son," McKinley told ABC News Oklahoma City affiliate KOCO. "It's not an easy decision to make, but it was either going to be him or my son. And it wasn't going to be my son. There's nothing more dangerous than a woman with a child."

I can understand that. But still, it is surprising to see that the police is often quickly there, when there is no real urgence, and that they are long to come when lifes are endangered.

Blanchard is very small and very rural. I'm not sure they even have their own police force. It's also route restricted in terms of how you get there.

That is indeed problematic. Will the police take measures to be more present in such places?

Well, there are county sheriffs in most counties, but again, Oklahoma is very sparsely populated outside of a few big cities. A lot of places out on dirt roads.

Thank you for your specifications. I agree that it is difficult to control sparsely populated counties. That reminds me that sometimes, cities can also seem desertic ...
I don't know much about the crime rates in your country. Are they increasing in rural regions?

Not that I've hear heard. You have to put perspective on it as well. Your whole country is a little bit larger than Maryland, one of our states. Look up Blanchard Oklahoma on Google maps and zoom in on the satellite view. I've lived in single developer housing tracts in Cali that were bigger than that whole town. It has 7600 residents but it is not limited to just the town area. Much of the surrounding area is considered to be Blanchard.

I looked into Google map; quite interesting! Blanchard looks like a big village from your point of view, regarding the residents but considering the surface, it is a town. I have been trying to compare with the mostly historic places in our regions, which have quite a different character. Morat or Murten (probably from celtic times, known from the wars with Burgundy), for instance, has about 6'125 residents and is a town which does not take much space, and Payerne (from the Roman times), with 8'728, residents is slightly bigger. And all these smaller places have their police stations within reach. With the urban sprawls, there is not much open country left on the Plateau, excepting the Alps and the Jura.

    Wasn't this a wonderful story!
Sent the POS "Late to Breakfast in HELL!"
    BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!
Sarah you did a wonderful job of working towards My Dream:

    "I have a dream!
A dream where instead of reading about a cute college coed left dead and naked out in a vacant lot or bloated and floating in a river, the story reads, “dead jackass found double-tapped and dead on the curb as his soul wings its way to hell, all because he messed with the wrong mama.”

In a heart beat. If one thinks and then shoots it is premeditated murder.

And I have. Nobody was killed, but I shot a man who was in my house and charged toward me after I warned him. This scenario andy scenario are examples of why we have the freedom to bear arms. Let the idiots kill each other off in the streets. Don't cry for them. Cry for the innocent lives who have been lost by criminals and junkies attacking unarmed people.

Taking another human isn,t something we like to think about but something you must be ready to do if you are serious about self defense. This lady did what was necessary to protect her child and herself.

This incident happened less than 20 miles from where I live. She had every right to kill this intruder. It has really messed with her emotionally though. No one wants to kill another, but will if threatened.
Oklahoma just passed an open carry law that goes into effect on Nov 1, 2012. Many people here are getting licensed to carry.

Without hesitation! Just had some break ins right here...next to me..and 2 doors down...thing is the 2 that did this crap, KNEW this home is armed..and we WILL shoot anyone that kicks the door in. Stranger tries to burst into your home is there to do harm, NOT bring you a basket of goodies. Also. when all of this was going on..the cops told us..IF they enter and you own a firearm you are within your rights to shoot.

I've seen this story before and I applaud what that woman did to that low life. At night I sleep with a loaded pistol under my pillow just in case some low life wipe breaks into my home.
