Woman Scams $2.1 Million With Turbo Tax: Anomaly or Systematic Problem?

Krystle Marie Reyes almost pulled off one of the biggest fraud cases in Oregon state history. The 25-year-old woman received a massive tax return approved by filing with Turbo Tax by falsely claiming a $3 million income. Even after officials examined the return, she manage to eek out a $2.1 million return, and burned through more than $150,000 before she was caught.

According to Oregon Live, her downfall came when she reported her spending prepaid debit card missing. The report launched an investigation that landed Reyes behind bars. Rep. Vicki Berger responded to the arrest, saying, "They've got some explaining to do to restore the confidence of Oregonians. Is this is an anomaly? If so, let's make sure it never happens again. Or do we have a systematic problem in the way the Department of Revenue treats this and other transactions?"

The problem wasn't the program, the problem was on the receipt.

As someone who has used TT for a couple of decades, the problem lies with a the use of a Credit/Debit Card as a refund. Common sense to me is that Turbo tax will likely review that particular way of handling refunds on likely anything over 1000 dollars.

I tend to think the fraud system of TT should have flagged the account and left it disabled until the verification at the state and federal level cleared.

The fact is she got caught indicates to me the system works to catch the anomaly.

The problem is that she only got caught AFTER reporting the card missing or else she may have been still burning through the dough right now.

The IRS is easily exploitable. Mexican's get $1000.00 child tax credits. Prisoners file tax returns. The IRS is a mess.

I'm one of the victims of tax fraud and the reason that IRS will not tell me who stole my identify is that they fear I would kill them. They're right.

She got caught because of her own stupidity after the scam. Had she not screwed up she'd have pulled it off. This shows a systemic problem in the system if she was not caught earlier.

Both. The $2.1M total is certainly an anomaly, but the fact that several government drones reviewed the return and approved it despite it being obviously false is systemic. this case illustrates how inept/corrupt/retarded/careless most government employees are.

Our tax system is an evil, wasteful monstrosity. We waste billions administering it.

Drop the income tax or just flatten it!!

We should either drop it completely or switch to a strictly consumption based tax system. The current income based tax system is repressive.

This is not a systematic problem, this is an epidemic! I deliver mail and I personally have turned in at least a 100 of these fraudulent cards just on my route alone. Our office has sent trays and trays of them to the Postal Inspectors. As soon as we noticed the problem we quit delivering them unless we knew the person lived there. I have one address that has had no less than 30 of them that I never delivered. Not one complaint from the whole bunch. I don't know how they do it but it should not be that easy!

No, actually, I have problems receiving my legitimate credit card bills and IRS communications. At least with the credit card bills I have online bills and payments so I know when they are due. I had an incident with armed IRS agents recently where they showed up at my house claiming that I owed a tremendous amount of money due to not having filed my taxes previously. Luckily, I was able to download copies of the checks that I had sent them. So, it either boiled down to the fact that they were harassing me for certain political statements that I had made (i.e. support of the FairTax.org plan) on the internet or the postal service was not forwarding their mail to me. Probably both...
