Woman Scams $2.1 Million With Turbo Tax: Anomaly or Systematic Problem?

Krystle Marie Reyes almost pulled off one of the biggest fraud cases in Oregon state history. The 25-year-old woman received a massive tax return approved by filing with Turbo Tax by falsely claiming a $3 million income. Even after officials examined the return, she manage to eek out a $2.1 million return, and burned through more than $150,000 before she was caught.

According to Oregon Live, her downfall came when she reported her spending prepaid debit card missing. The report launched an investigation that landed Reyes behind bars. Rep. Vicki Berger responded to the arrest, saying, "They've got some explaining to do to restore the confidence of Oregonians. Is this is an anomaly? If so, let's make sure it never happens again. Or do we have a systematic problem in the way the Department of Revenue treats this and other transactions?"

What really gets me is that this broad could still be spending a wad of dough right now had she not lost her pre-paid debit card and then REPORTED IT STOLEN!!! Sheeeesh!

You have WAY too much faith in the "justice" system: she's probably out shopping now, since she had the money to post bail! HA!!!

There is an underlying systematic problem, but the mixup was quickly caught, and the correction which would be necessary to fix this from ever happening would be more costly to the economy than the systematic problem itself is.

Wait... You're saying that only someone who's a "1 percenter" (someone who makes roughly $300k or more per year) would submit a fake tax return claiming that they'd earned over $3 million in order to fraudulently obtain a tax refund?? What would be the incentive for someone who's already fairly wealthy to steal tax money and risk their freedom?

The tea party is about freedom from overreaching government and excessive taxation. It is not about fraud and crime.

The tea party has not been very supportive of Romney actually... They've supported Cain, Santorum, and Gingrich. Will the tea party supporters vote for Romney over Obama? Of course! When you're faced with a choice between someone you agree with 50% of the time and someone you agree with 5% of the time, the choice is easy.

Now it's about racism and corporate handouts? Funny considering that the tea party has been pushing for LESS government bailouts of corporations, less involvement of government in corporate affairs and vice versa... Further, not all super-rich are conservatives. I don't see liberals complaining about Oprah Winfrey, Jay Leno, Al Gore, Obama, Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs (RIP), George Soros, etc...

Tax attorneys don't get people out of taxes they rightfully owe, they merely help them identify where they legally do not owe. You want to solve that problem, then advocate for the elimination of the current tax system, and replace it with a flat consumption tax, where you don't get any deductions, but only pay taxes on things that you buy.

Any tax software only knows what you tell it. There are some things it will catch but as long as you work within the guidelines it will do what you tell it. If the state or federal would cross check your current return with your previous year returns it would catch something this big up front. Clearly this was not done here.

Let's not gag at the gnat and swallow the camel.
