Woman Arrested for Sign Warning About Police Speed Trap: Obstruction of Justice?

Police initially arrested Natalie Plummer of Houston, Texas and jailed for 12 hours for felony obstruction of justice. Miss Plummer held up a sign warning drivers of a police speed trap and this greatly upset law enforcement. Eventually, police charged Miss Plummer with misdemeanor "walking in the road where a sidewalk is present," otherwise referred to as serious jaywalking.

Houston Police Department didn't want to comment about the arrest or charges against Miss Plummer. The police dropped the serious felony charge, which carries a punishment of several years in prison. "He couldn't take me to jail for holding up this sign or he would have. So all he could do was make up something fake about it," Miss Plummer told KTRK radio.

Did Houston police properly arrest Miss Plummer for obstructing justice? Did they violate her free speech rights?

Daily Mail UK reports:Natalie Plummer was officially charged with walking in the roadway -- jaywalking, essentially -- though she says the officers in Houston, Texas, who arrested her were just angry that she had tipped off speeders.

She obstructed the police's ability to tax and fine people. That's about it.

And we are worried about women holding signs legally while we have a criminal government that runs guns and grenades into mexico while launder drug money through megabanks? And as that occurs over 100,000 people die every year from adverse drug interaction from the same healthcare system the government is forcing us all to buy into while more natural treatments kill no one?

I wish this was all a sick joke.

From what I have been able to gather from the various video and news sources the police trumped up the charges against her for walking along the side walk showing a sign warning drivers of a radar speed trap.

How is her sign any different than a speed limit sign? They both warn of consequences.

She potentially obstructed a revenue stream the department is depending on.
The should have commended her for reminding motorists to maintain a safe
speed in the interest of Public safety. But obviously the revenue stream wins.

Definitely reason to petition the courts for redress on the actions of the officer and even consult the ACLU for representation in the matter.

Freedom of speech, whether she gave them the middle finger in the expression of her opinion or with a sign as a concerned citizen warning other drivers of imminent dangers and police presence on the road before them. Guard dog on duty or slow down police are ahead are both an excercise of free speech.

Just as remaining silent when being questioned by police is not obstruction of justice regardless of the purpose of the inquiry. .

    Let's review...

Attorney General Eric Holder, is held in contempt of Congress, for withholding the truth... And Ms. Plummer, is criminally charged, for telling the truth.

The (UN) Patriot Act, allows the arrest and detention of anyone, without charge, for 72 hours, and (If) released, it's a felony to speak of the arrest.

Could these be a few indicators of a growing police State?

One could easily speculate that speed traps will become passe. With the growing presence of police (State) Drones... You will receive a ticket by mail, from evidence acquired from aerial speed traps. (If the operator can steer away from the double D's, being tanned, in a nearby Backyard?

More unread legislation, from your elected representatives.

Perhaps, it's time to look beyond your remote control, when voting for the (So called) leadership, we keep giving Ourselves?

She was obviously able to get people to slow down and thereby make the streets of her community safer. The police want people to break the law so they can make a financial gain out of it. The city council should fire the cops.

Just like the officers who kick down the wrong door, kill the occupants, were merely performing their duty!

Clearly, too general a point of view, and I'm guessing more a case of semantics.

it would depend on why they kicked down the door. and why shots were fired. would it not? and using this as a bar to measure all police action is as general as you can get.

An extreme example... but a needless kill, nonetheless.

Sorry, Law enforcement is not entitled to use "Duty" as an excuse, under every condition. That was my point.
  • Rick4Ro... apacheh... 2012/07/02 01:56:53 (edited)
    Rick4Ron - Paul☮2012
So, WHY they kicked down the WRONG door, absolves them from responsibility?

That example was not meant as a "Bar" those are your words and perception.

Just an example, not a general impeachment. The use of "All" is again, your verbiage.

In that singular example, a recently discharged Marine was in his home as a Swat team kicked the door down and entered forcefully. The Marine engaged the unknown and undeclared invaders, as trained. He was killed with numerous bullets.

It was the wrong house for their drug raid.

Of course, we hear a similar scenario, too often. The last was a grandma.

So much for a mans castle?

There are limits and conduct, to authority, unless you live in a police state?

It appears, more and more, that we do.

That is only true if their duty is a ticket quota and revenue generation. I thought the real duty was to make sure people stay under the speed limit, which this woman seems to be assisting with.

Rather than allowing speeders to continue speeding, her sign slowed people down and produced a safer environment - which I thought was the duty of the officer.

quotas would have nothing to do with it. the woman has not been hired or trained to uphold the law. there fore it is not her job to do so. it is also not her place to interfere with those whose it is. her purpose for doing this was not to uphold a law. but to hinder people from doing this. and to help people around the law.
  • Dan ☮ R... apacheh... 2012/07/02 02:51:34

I personally dont think police these days are trained all that well either considering how so many resort to tasers when they are not necessary, and many think its actually illegal to videotape police officers.

Taxing and fining people is not upholding the law. The only way that acts as a method to uphold the law is the fact that it can act as a deterrent. She's assisting in the effectiveness of that deterrent as evident by the fact that people are slowing down.
To say she didnt assist in upholding the law would mean for me to accept the law as a revenue generation tool rather than to keep us safe or protect our rights.
