Our precincts have copies of our registration cards. We have to sign so the signatures can be checked. That seems pretty safe to me.
I think you're right that the problem lies elsewhere than in voter registration. NOBODY imo should get a license (or State ID in lieu of) without a birth certificate or proof of citizenship. The subversion and perversion of what our forefathers died to secure for us makes me sick.
I don't have a problem with ID (or profiling). :)
