Will 'Failure to Launch' Camps Help Young Adults?

According to Associated Press, young men are almost twice as likely as young women to still be living with their parents, and less likely to finish college or have a job. High unemployment is obviously a big part of the problem, but experts also point to cultural elements, such as online porn and video games, or to the education system and parenting.

For young men attending Insight Intensive, a residential program in Boulder, Colorado, it's a classic case of "failure to launch." The residential program was co-founded by Joseph DeNucci to help depressed young men who have felt unable to motivate themselves to find work.

DeNucci explains, "For years, we've been sending people to 12-step programs. But this 18- or 19-year-old who's smoking pot, playing World of Warcraft and sitting on the couch in his parents' home — is he an addict? No. He might be working on being an addict ... I think they all know, at some level, that something has to change."

The program provides residents with a motivational and structured environment that includes a healthy sleep schedule, exercise, group therapy, family therapy, and meaningful conversation. Critics accuse the camp of "coddling" the young men, but Tracy Markle, Insight's clinical director, says it's about "getting them an identity that is separate from their parents ... For a lot of these families, success is power. If you don't have it, you're nobody. That's the message."

That might be because the parents' success is a prerequisite. The program costs $350 per day.

Look at the way popular culture has displayed the traditional male role in our society.
Men are displayed as the fool of the family. If not a total fool then an abuser of women and children.

The court system is slanted against them in any divorce settlement to the point that they start asking themselves why would they want to grow up. Our culture doesn't emphasis the traditional male role of the wise father and loving husband. We celebrate single mothethood and constantly hear that the father isn't needed and in fact is the problem. Our society is reaping what we have sown.

Young women are encouraged to not let anything but her own self interest guide her. If she dreams of meeting a great man and raIsing a family she is looked at with contempt.
There is NO celebration of self sacrifice for either gender that is required to raise a family. It's all about ME, ME , ME!

If they're set up right, yeah. There's some damage that can't be undone from growing up, of course.

A lot of the people this kind of therapy is targeting aren't lazy slobs out of laziness, it's because they feel hopeless about society, and because of this they become apathetic towards success. I know, I used to be one of those pot smoking, sleep all say, WoW playing rejects, and the way I got out of it is because I had a friend motivate me and show me that I could achieve success. This kind of program provides these young people with motivation to get off their asses and go out and do something with their lives.

The cost is a bit much though.

Anything that takes away the opportunity for young people to learn new and different things will take away from their growth and development.

Video games and porn have nothing to do with people not leaving home. The 2 main things preventing people from leaving home is the lack of available jobs and the lack of proper education. We have people going through 12 years of school graduating and still being dumb-sh!ts. They can't speak proper english even though they graduated high school so how can people expect them to get and hold a job that pays enough to live on? Make the economy better. That means make more jobs that pay enough to live on and make sure everyone is getting the proper education so people can leave home and get them a job so they can get there own home. No more of this: yo dawg i has a good time tday i fu!!!d that bi!!!. No just no. Obviously said person wasn't raised right and wasn't given a proper education if said person went through 12 years of school and still talks like that.

Nothing wrong with these young folks that 20 years in the Marines wouldn't cure. A Boot camp not a "Falure To Launch" camp. They'd be lounching all over the
    place.

I didn't know, I'm in the Netherlands. Military duty used to be a year and a half here. It never crossed my mind that it was that different in other parts of the world. But the government in the Us could change their law so they can use my idea :)

$350 a day for baby-sitting those lazy spoiled teenage boys!! Bring back the military draft and get those free-loader sons out of the family house! That way they will learn all about hard work, responsibility, discipline, integrity, dependability, team work, motivation, etc., and it won't cost them a cent. They can also get a free college education, courtesy of the military service. Since there is presently no military service draft, those freeloader sons should join the Armed Services - it will make a man out of them!

I served in the marines from 1979 to 83. Four months after I got out, my old unit was blown up in Beirut. I lost some good friends that day

Every county Sheriff needs to register his 18 year olds in the constitutional militia.
And give them 8 weeks of basic traing then 8 more of advanced infantry training.

National Service doesn't have to military service or even anything oriented that way. It could be keeping streets clean or working in more compassionate industries like the elderly or with the homeless

16 weeks of military training is a lot less than the two years, or more, my generation had to go through.
The feds can't draft people to shift bed pans but states and localities weren't constrained (see the tenth amendment) near as much as the fed gov.
You want to end the military industiral complex then you will need a trained ("well regulated") militia to secure the country from invasion.
Also I'm not for abolishing the regular military, just cutting it in half and slashing their budget by two thrids over ten years.

I;m not for abolishing the military either. I served and always thought for personal and sometimes selfish reasons, there should be a draft. I was just saying that that there are other ways of serving the country than just military service.

National Service, other than in military training, would be forced labor. It's not the governments business to practice slavery.
The only justification for a darft is the defense of the country. We don't need one now.
Helping seniors or what ever should be voluntary charity work.

It wouldn't be slavery as they would be paid for it.

A dead 'man' isn't better than a living boy. The answer is not the draft, nor is it military service. The answer is improved education and cheaper tuition for college.

    Sounds like it don't it.

    Moses also delivered the commandment
"Honour thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth."

Males in this society are raised to be what women wanted men to be in the 70s. Weak, non motivated and subservient to women. Well ladies you got what you want. Now what are you going to do? Complain that your daughters have to work to support the favorite male in their life? The human male is the number one predator on the planet bar none. It has taken a number of years to train the school and social system to eliminate the predator, now There is a whole generation of nuetered males to contend with. So have fun ladies ya got what ya wanted.

The government has taken the place of men. For example, the government has become the provider for unwed mother's lively hoods. Women have become encouraged to not marry, but not deny themselves the experience of motherhood. Until we value mens' rolls in society things will not change.
