The federal government lacks the authority except by constitutional amendment. I think the country would have to "collapse" first, in that a group of red states might secede over exactly these types of social and religion-based issues.

I find a great irony in the abortion debate because abortion serves the purpose of controlling unwanted children among blacks, exactly why Planned Parenthood was started, yet those most opposed to abortion are also supposedly racist, or at least fighting to avoid becoming a minority to blacks.
