The release of secret documents, which gave a devastating picture of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, might lead to a different casualty than first thought: Barack Obama's presidency.
Though Democratic leaders said that Afghanistan "was the right war" when criticizing George W. Bush about his Iraq strategy, they now find themselves divided. While the liberal wing has long agitated for a quick withdrawal, the Obama administration, with congressional support, had taken a more nuanced approach.
Knowing that any immediate withdrawal from the region could prove catastrophic, not only to Afghanistan but to global prestige, Obama devised a timetable for a surge than a slow withdrawal of troops. But a growing concern over battle deaths, and the detail in the Wikileaks war documents has prompted a swelling of Democratic opposition.
Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell suggested on Morning Joe that if the president doesn't withdraw troops in a timely matter, Obama could face anti-war Democratic challenger in 2012.

"Fred Talks Wikileaks with Fomer CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden"
July 27, 2010
"...What they don't understand is - it's not secret because of the data, it's secret because of how you got it. It's secret because of from whom you got it. And [these leakers] have no idea, they have no ability to even to make that judgement, because they don't know the system... that is being revealed..."

THIS will tell you WHY it's important to keep things SECRET! WHY this data will HARM our troops!
Julian Assange is a hero.
I see no reason for us to even be in that combat zone, so that's pretty much a moot point.

forbidden by law or statute.

Hiding runaway slaves was wrong? Because it was absolutely illegal.
I happen to agree, because I believe that our foreign policy is seriously flawed, and as a conservative, I think we should take responsibility for our errors and fix them, not continue them.
I don't disagree that the military has to punish Manning for this, and even he stated that he knew full well that his life would be endangered by his actions.
GEEZE...YOU CAN'T SEE THAT? WHAT MAKES _YOU_ MORAL FOR DOING THAT?
What Manning did may be wrong, but he claims did it to expose the fact that our foreign policy (and the money that goes along with it) is endangering our troops. To him, it would be immoral to not disclose the evidence.
If putting lives in danger is immoral, then let's bring the troops home.
Afghanistan will hurt Obama regardless of what he does there. The only question is whether he's chosen the least awful alternative. We can only hope.
