Will Afghanistan Doom the Obama Presidency?

The release of secret documents, which gave a devastating picture of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, might lead to a different casualty than first thought: Barack Obama's presidency.

Though Democratic leaders said that Afghanistan "was the right war" when criticizing George W. Bush about his Iraq strategy, they now find themselves divided. While the liberal wing has long agitated for a quick withdrawal, the Obama administration, with congressional support, had taken a more nuanced approach.

Knowing that any immediate withdrawal from the region could prove catastrophic, not only to Afghanistan but to global prestige, Obama devised a timetable for a surge than a slow withdrawal of troops. But a growing concern over battle deaths, and the detail in the Wikileaks war documents has prompted a swelling of Democratic opposition.

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell suggested on Morning Joe that if the president doesn't withdraw troops in a timely matter, Obama could face anti-war Democratic challenger in 2012.

Will the Afghanistan War Doom Obama's Presidency?

Hes one and done, BUT AMERICA NEEDS TO WAKE UP HE IS NOT THE PROBLEM ITS THE PEOPLE PULLING HIS STRINGS, MANY BELIEVE VOTING FOR A NEW PRESIDENT WILL CHANGE THINGS BUT IT WONT YOU'RE JUST A VICTIM TO THE FALSE LEFT-RIGHT PARADIGM. THE MIDDLE EAST IS A QUAGMIRE AND WE ARE NEVER LEAVING, THIS PHONY WAR ON TERROR WILL NEVER GO AWAY UNTIL PEOPLE WAKE UP AND REALIZE THAT THE TRUE THREAT TO THE U.S. IS THE BANKERS WHO CONTROL EVERYTHING IN OUR GOVERNMENT. OSAMA BIN LADEN IS NOT OUR ENEMY, WE CREATED HIM AND THE TALIBAN. IF ANYTHING THE LEAKED DOCUMENTS SHOULD BE A WAKE UP CALL, THE BANKERS ARE FUNDING BOTH SIDES OF THIS WAR TO MAKE MONEY AND EVENTUALLY GET MORE POWER. IF WE DONT STAND UP THE ENDGAME IS GOING TO BE A SERIOUS RUDE AWAKENING, THE ONCE GREAT COUNTRY WE HAD WILL BE NO MORE. THERE NEEDS TO BE A REVOLUTION, WE NEED TO TAKE THIS COUNTRY BACK.

tHIS VIDEO IS JUST A SMALL PIECE OF THE SCAMS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE BEING DOOPED INTO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK ME FOR MORE THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF HERE AND THE TIME FOR SITTING BACK IS NO MORE.

It will unless he is holding on to withdrawal as a greasy political hold card for the 2014 elections which I would really hope wouldn't happen but in the back of my mind I still think is a sleazy option for him. No end game in sight, has not sold American people who he MUST convince on why we are still there. Poor wartime leader, not skilled in international affairs but what do you expect just a few years ago he was worrying about a piddling little ward in Chitown.

The war won't be his death knell for his 2nd term. He did that through his inept administration and policies long before that. I look forward to the day when he leaves office in 2012. Then they can erect his Presidential Library in Chicago. They will erect it in the most drug ridden, poverty stricken, area of Chicago so they can make more money selling it to the Obamanites. A deserved end to such a corrupt, inept, bungling Presidency. poverty stricken chicago money selling obamanites corrupt inept bungling presidency

They have to keep their secrets because the government is lying to us about war, again.

NO he isn't...what he has done is exposed "secrets" that endange the lives of our servicemen and women! Do YOU have anyone serving in a combat zone? I do...and let me tell ya...I do NOT appreciate what that piece of slime did! There is just SOME sensitive information that needs to be kept under wraps! JA is just that a J***A***...and sensation seeker...if he wants approbation...send him to a battlefield to do it from...not hiding in an office. If HE was to be the one being shot at...he would do/think differently!
  • AngelaTC Chris 2010/07/29 17:12:31

I have no doubt he knows he will face criminal charges, but that only makes him more of a hero.

I see no reason for us to even be in that combat zone, so that's pretty much a moot point.

Just because something is illegal doesn't mean that is is wrong. It only means that it is illegal. History proves that again and again.

There is a DIFFERENCE between IMMORAL and ILLEGAL...look it up! What BHO is doing w/our Constitution and bypassing WE THE PEOPLE is BOTH!
  • AngelaTC Chris 2010/08/05 18:07:13
    AngelaTC
There is indeed a difference between immoral and illegal. That's exactly the point I was trying to make. Manning stole the documents because he felt that telling the world about the lies of war mongers was the moral thing to do.

I happen to agree, because I believe that our foreign policy is seriously flawed, and as a conservative, I think we should take responsibility for our errors and fix them, not continue them.

I don't disagree that the military has to punish Manning for this, and even he stated that he knew full well that his life would be endangered by his actions.
  • Chris AngelaTC 2010/08/06 10:53:26 (edited)
    Chris
PUTTING LIVES IN DANGER IS IMMORAL! YOU ARE WRONG AND MANNING-CRAP IS WRONG!

GEEZE...YOU CAN'T SEE THAT? WHAT MAKES _YOU_ MORAL FOR DOING THAT?
  • AngelaTC Chris 2010/08/06 16:56:35
    AngelaTC
Using tax dollars to fund the enemy is also immoral, is it not?

What Manning did may be wrong, but he claims did it to expose the fact that our foreign policy (and the money that goes along with it) is endangering our troops. To him, it would be immoral to not disclose the evidence.

If putting lives in danger is immoral, then let's bring the troops home.
  • Chris AngelaTC 2010/08/06 19:05:23
    Chris
Yeah..."he claims"...that makes it ALL BETTER!
  • AngelaTC Chris 2010/08/06 19:26:38
    AngelaTC
Well, seeing that what he said is actually true (not only that the money we're sending in foreign aid is being routed directly to the Taliban, but that we know about it, and are therefore in fact intentionally funding the Taliban) would seem to lend credibility to his statement .

I think people realize that the afghanistan war had already gone waaaaay offtrack. At leat Obama planned for some kind of withdrawal. I think people realize that if we hadn't made such a diversion of time, troops, money to the unwarranted war in Iraq, we wouldn't be in this mess now.
  • Steve 2010/07/29 06:24:18
No. I have confidence in the president's abilities.

Very early on, the Bush war effort in Afghanistan went astray. Obama is attempting to salvage some kind of reasonable resolution with a surge. Bad idea, but all the other alternatives were at least as bad.

Afghanistan will hurt Obama regardless of what he does there. The only question is whether he's chosen the least awful alternative. We can only hope.
