The African Safari was totally at the taxpayers' expense, yet Michelle taking one daughter is stealing money from the taxpayers. Hypocrisy.

More like hypocrisy, the conservative way.

Or maybe just stupidity. I just got a reply from a RWN when I brought up the safari who somehow thought Laura Bush's trip was saving lives in Africa.

The question is why isn't the left as outraged with the Obamas' vacations as they were during the 8 years of Bush? Why aren't they as outraged with their president when he lies and dodges questions like Bush did? Why aren't they outraged about high gas and food prices (gas prices have doubled under Obama) like they were when Bush was in office? TALK ABOUT HYPOCRISY!!!

Selective thinking, I guess. Happens here too. It was refreshing to see our new PM take British Airways for his US trip- although I guess that there was plenty of security.
We had the Queen take a public train some months ago: although some Royals are more frugal than others.
I rarely say anything good about Blair, but he did manage to fleece the Italian tax payer for a fair few holidays......... frugal rarely blair manage fleece italian tax payer fair holidays

I wonder if the 30 billion Bush pledged to Africa on behalf of his wife's trip was paid by the over-burden tax payers or also another freebie.

Actually it was an Official Trip and she made several "Official Appearances" as First Lady Of The United States... That's how the Safari got paid for by tax dollars...

I didn't begrudge Laura for that trip and I don't begrudge Michelle for hers...

The SAID it was an "official visit," which is BS, they didn't want to get dinged for spending tax payers money lavishly.

It was an Official Trip not a vacation... Michelle's trip is an actual vacation... People are making a big deal out of nothing over these two trips by First Lady's... As long as the Dems are focused on defending "fluff" like a vacation and Ice Cream Cones in Maine the less time they are focused on the issues at hand for the upcoming elections...

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) -- First lady Laura Bush started a four-nation Africa tour Monday that is expected to focus on how the U.S. can help fight AIDS on a continent where many countries struggle to even provide basic health care.
Mrs. Bush, accompanied by her daughter Jenna, is scheduled to visit areas that have benefited from U.S. AIDS funding this week -- the west African nations of Senegal and Mali, along with Mozambique and Zambia in southern Africa.

Mrs. Bush and her daughter were greeted in Senegal's seaside capital late Monday by a group of about 30 dignitaries, including Senegal's first lady, Viviane Wade, and her daughter.

Last month, President Bush called on Congress to authorize an additional $30 billion to fight AIDS in Africa, a figure that would double the U.S. commitment to the continent. The current program, which provided $15 billion over five years, expires in September 2008.

The president's Emergency Program for AIDS Relief has supported treatment for 1.1 million people in 15 countries, Bush said in calling for the program's renewal.

On Tuesday, Mrs. Bush is scheduled to visit a Senegalese hospital whose AIDS programs include a vegetable garden to improve nutrition by supplementing patients' meals and an after-hours AIDS drug dispensary.

Really easy excuse the administration gave Laura's Bush's vacation to Africa--going on Safari. Senegal is one country where AIDS is NOT on of the countries devastated by this disease.

This whole thing is another example of the outing of the previous "American Dream".
Only today is the American Dream frowned upon. If you have the money to take your kids to learn about the world, it's no longer seen as a good thing. It's seen as sticking your finger up at those who even if they had the money would still go to Las Vegas.
This is truly a turning point in American history when being "well off" is a crime.
