a few weeks ago, i was listening to a conservative complaining about regulations, and the minimum wage, saying they must be eliminated. when i could stand it no more, i shot back, so, you're in favor of the race to the bottom. you want everyone's wages to go down, and to have an unsafe workplace. he stop talking and left.

It's only a bad word for people who think you're a snob if you get an education and like thinking for yourself...

Neither Liberal nor Conservative is a bad word but I believe that a liberal philosophy leads to progress, innovation and a society where all are included, educated and provided an equal opportunity to succeed and contribute to society.
Conservatism always seems to want to go backwards, keep the status quo, not in favor of progress or new ideas. There are times when it's good to be conservative but, in my opinion, the times when we really shine are those when we are being more liberal.
    Liberal
    1. Relating to or having social and political views that favor progress and reform
    2. Relating to or having policies or views advocating individual freedom
    3. Giving and generous in temperament or behaviour
    4. Tolerant of other people
    5. Abundant; lavish: a liberal helping of cream
    6. Not strict; free: a liberal translation
    7. Of or relating to an education that aims to develop general cultural interests and
    intellectual ability.
    Conservative
    1. Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change.
    2. Traditional or restrained in style: a conservative dark suit.
    3. Moderate; cautious: a conservative estimate.
    4. Of or relating to the political philosophy of conservatism.
    5. Belonging to a conservative party, group, or movement.

CRAP - HIT THE WRONG ANSWER.

Liberal IS NOT a bad word.

Without the "liberals", the USA wouldn't be the USA.

Why is "Conservative" such a bad word? Is it really?
  • gregory... Outta' ... 2012/07/30 19:42:25
    gregory.ditzler
It is a bad word because conservative stands for living in the past and refusing to change for a better tomorrow.
  • Outta' ... gregory... 2012/08/01 20:27:26
    Outta' Here.
    That's one definition of it.
Not the correct definition, but a definition.

    gregory.ditzler
then how do you define conservative?
  • Outta' ... gregory... 2012/08/01 20:44:46
    Outta' Here.
The same way Merriam-Webster does -
    con·ser·va·tive
    adj \kən-ˈsər-və-tiv\
    Definition of CONSERVATIVE
    1: preservative
2a : of or relating to a philosophy of conservatism b capitalized : of or constituting a political party professing the principles of conservatism: as (1) : of or constituting a party of the United Kingdom advocating support of established institutions (2) : progressive conservative
3a : tending or disposed to maintain existing views, conditions, or institutions : traditional b : marked by moderation or caution c : marked by or relating to traditional norms of taste, elegance, style, or manners

Sounds like "no progress" to me.

Got a point or just trying to pick a fight?
  • Pat Outta' ... 2012/08/01 22:06:57
    Pat
No, I don't like to fight. I was just saying that the definition of conservative seems to also fit "no progress".
  • Outta' ... Pat 2012/08/01 22:09:17
    Outta' Here.
It also fits "one who conserves", as opposed to liberal which can be described as "being very liberal or free with resources".

You have a great day now.
  • Pat Outta' ... 2012/08/01 22:13:09

Sometimes it takes a leap of faith to make progress. Doing the same thing over and over again simply leaves you in the same rut you started in. I'm really not trying to argue, it's just my opinion.

When self proclaimed Conservatives call anyone who disagrees with them "libtard, libturd, Marxist, Muslim "etc etc and blocks anyone who refuses to join in their echo chamber of abuse, then yes.
They make themselves look stupid and all conservatives with them.

Personally i prefer to engage in debate without name calling. Doesn't stop me getting blocked.
For example this person blocked me for saying "to be fair it happens on both sides" or words to that effect - look it you if you want.
