Why is it that according to many on this site, being liberal automatically equates to being unpatriotic and wanting to destroy the country?

This question just comes from observation and arguments I have gotten with other users. These are attacks I have witnessed for a while and to me they are ridiculous and subtract from the real issue at hand. Since when is expressing an opposing point of view considered unpatriotic in this country? How is wanted equal rights for all minority groups wanting to destroy the country?

What do you think about this?

The United States of America was the first country to be founded on the liberal ideas of John Locke and other philosophers of the Enlightenment, with no monarchy, no hereditary aristocracy, and no established religion. The American Bill of Rights guarantees every citizen the freedoms advocated by the liberal philosophers: freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to gather in peaceful assembly, the right to petition the government for redress of grievances, and the right to bear arms, among other freedoms and rights. In this sense, virtually all Americans are liberals. However, questions arose, both before and after the country was founded. In the Dred Scott decision of 1856-57, the Supreme Court ruled that these rights only applied to White men, and that Blacks had no rights what-so-ever that any White man was obliged to respect. Therefore the constitution was amended several times to extend these rights to ever larger classes of citizens, to all citizens in 1868, then specifically to Blacks in 1870, to women in 1919, and to people unable to afford a poll tax in 1964.

Liberals in most part more patriotic than most !

Wow, you see the link for Media Matters and you think that is all I read. As I told you...that link was for a critique of the way Goldberg critiques what he READS, not his book. I have read exerpts from his book and I just don't buy it.
Fascism gave the world unheard of atrocities that the right just doesn't want to own, it's the same with the left when you look at what people like Stalin did. But history is what it is.
    I don't believe healthcare reform is a bad thing...sorry.

Sorry, one more thought. When I was in high school a friend gave me a copy of "Chariot of the Gods" and said that I just "had" to read it. I did and it made a good case for the theory that aliens, not God, had been the creator of modern humans. You wouldn't believe the citations VonDaniken used...even the Bible! LOL!

Not so ! Because of modern liberalism which never really stop in it's basic freedom of speech, religion, and even taxation ! Remember taxation with out representation is the main slogan from the 1750's and 1760's ? The only difference is our representatives are now lobbyist, their goals and strategies are the same. First and foremost, lobbyists must be adept at the art of persuasion, which is the mainstay of their job. They must figure out how to sway politicians to vote on legislation in a way that favors the interest they represent. The biggest liberal was a democratic party and one of the greatest presidents ever by the name of Franklin D. Roosevelt and if you don't think so heaven help you around any VFW or American Legion !

I say put away your bigotry and think of the country not stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own.

Historically inaccurate, to say the least. You're lost, please go look up the definition of “classical liberalism” and compare it to the definition of “modern day liberalism”, it will open your eyes to the truth. To open your comment with "Not so!" only shows that you're ignoring the truth.

FYI, lobbyists are nothing more than a vehicle for organized corruption and cronyism, it breeds Corporatism (soft-fascism). Not sure if you know what that means either.

And no, FDR was certainly not one of the greatest presidents ever. He and Woodrow Wilson set us on the destructive course we're on today, massive government growth, spending, military industrial complex, the Federal Reserve, government intrusion, regulation, taxes without representation, massive entitlement programs, etc. (both Parties have adopted it). No, not a great President if you like individual freedom and liberty.

We have to right the ship and get back to our founding principles. Principles that put faith in the individual and the power resided with the states (see the 10th Amendment), not the collective and certainly not the federal government (see Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution).

LOL. I've already been there, you're the type they complain about. You ignore history and continue to not educate yourself, on purpose, and yet you tell other people learn history? That's rich! You won't even spend 5 minutes to do a simple google search because you're scared to learn the truth.

And I talk to veterans all the time, my own brother is a Marine, they don't have a problem with me because they don't have a problem with our founding principles of limited government, lower taxes, and maximum freedom and liberty. You're just afraid of anyone touching your entitlement programs, even if they're trying to improve them.

Talking to a member of the far left is like talking to a person standing on the ledge of a building. They are very emotional, which is the center of their ideology - emotion - not reason! I can usually talk them down using facts, reason and logic, they'll come down from the ledge reluctantly, but they still submit to defeat, whether they admit it or not. Changing the subject is a clear sign of defeat (see above conversation)........however, there's no guarantee that they won't be back up on that ledge the next day!

Sometimes I wonder why I even try, but it beats having the same shouting match where we're both telling each other to STFU!

Joeblo is correct. Its all labels. To claim allegiance to a group is to condem yourself as a closed-minded individual who follows a pattern of thinking. I'm conservative, so when I say that, people will automatically assume I think one particular way and that I'm pro this and anti that. But, that couldn't be further from the truth.

Perhaps it's because of the people liberals worship and choose as their spokes-persons.

Perhaps it's because they praise racists like Al Sharpton and Sheila Jackson Lee, yet vilify people like Star Parker and Col. Allen West.

Perhaps it's because they've tuned into MSLSD and had to turn the volume halfway down.

Perhaps it's because statements made like "I'll have these N*****s voting Democrat for 200 years".

I could go on, but I think you get the drift.

Dubya's presidency ended in a great recession but I never heard a Democrat say he was destroying the country. Bad policies, ignorant, yes, not the over the top rhetoric of a Gingrich saying Alinsky in action. I never heard a major liberal media outlet come out with Dubya is purposely making the country fail, Foxnews does it constantly.

Only one "justification" almost makes sense to me. I think people who do that believe they are right, well-intentioned, intelligent and patriotic. Therefore, they contend that people who disagree with them must NOT be at least one of those things. That is the best I can come up with. It is the my way or the highway mentality.

If your proud of your politics why do you constantly defend your beliefs? I know I keep seeing blogs like this one that your constantly defending your beliefs, are you people ashamed of your views,or what? As a conservative Moderate Independent I could care less what anyone things of my views, and will defend them at every opportunity! I have both conservative, and liberal views.

Because part of having confidence in your point of view is being able to defend it. If I was ashamed of being liberal then I wouldn't be putting myself out there like this and making it known I was one.

I think the unfair accusations go both ways. When people push their views the opposite side tends to push back. Maybe you don't try to shove your beliefs and/or thoughts down on others but when a person does that the person it is being shoved on tends to shove back with fair or foul means.

Well I can't tell you how many times I've been called racist for not like Obama. I can't help but laugh I am far from racist. And that is the card many liberals shove in someones face that doesn't like him. There are many racist people that dont like him I am sure. But it gets old ya know? As I am sure being called unpatriotic is old or getting old.
