Why doesn't the United States drill for there own oil?

Sinpac 2011/03/31 22:31:01

I have a theory. Could it be that the cost of building oil rigs and refineries is not cost effective with the price we can buy it for overseas? Could it be Americans just don’t want to look at oil rigs?

Help me out here just trying to put it together.

Thanks

I think this is the most stupidest thing ever. We should be mining our own oil. It would be cheaper if we just mined our own oil. Obama thinks that we will use our oil up in no time but man is he stupid. Democrats think that we should start using electric cars because it pollutes less but you know what's weird? They don't even have electric cars. They use normal cars that they say they pollute a lot. Do you think that we are driving with a bunch of black smoke all over us? By the way it is going to take along time for us to use up all the oil. Obama also thinks the oil is dirty. Who cares if it is dirty. It's not like were drinking it.

We have lost our common sense and let the environmentalist shut down large parts of this country. Yes we must protect our environment but we can not stop living to do it.

Here's a problem I heard on the news. Those deep water oil rigs and the oil they produce in the gulf, due to a law from years ago they don't have to sell even one drop of that oil to the USA. They can sell it to China if they choose. They have the drilling rights and the rights to sell that oil to anyone they chose.

The most basic principal of marketing is that when supply of a commodity increases, the market
price will be driven downward. How much more do you need to know? Big Oil corporations and their Wall Street handlers are awash with profits, so much so they wouldn't really know what to do with more. They are not about to upset their golden goose by bringing more supply into the market, not so long as anyone in the Western world has a dollar left in their pocket with which to
pay for gasoline or heating oil. This is a fundamental principal of the plantation on which you are
chopping cotton for the new Aristocrats and their Wall Street "Reagan Banks" and Barons.

I used to know a man that worked in the oil fields in the central US. He said time and again they would drill the well only to cap it off once they found oil or gas. While he was not privy to the why of it he speculated that they held off pulling the oil until the price was right. This was several decades ago but not sure but what the same thing goes on today.

Oil is produced by private companies. They don't care where they sell it. They will always sell it to the highest bidder or the place that gives them a guaranteed, longterm contract.

it all goes to the same market in the same exchanges no matter where it's drilled . to think oil companies would sell it to us cheaper is a myth .

so you'd ask an oil company to drill for oil (no cheap endeavor) pump it and refine it just to sell it at a less than market price? nah i dont think so .

I agree, there is a local station right down the street that claim they sell American Fuel from the midwest, Why is the price the same as the fuel that gets imported?

The autosphere is abuzzed with recent that U.S. President Barack Obama wants more oil pumped here in the good old United States. Say what?
According to various sources (see below), the call for increased domestic production came as a surprise to some, who saw the administration’s tight clamp-down on offshore drilling directly following the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf as an over-reaction. Although the Department of the Interior has identified that 57 percent of on-shore, and 70 percent of off-shore leases are inactive, some industry analysts say the administration’s policies have not exactly been conducive to encouraging domestic production. In some cases, leases granted under the Bush administration have been rescinded due to environmental concerns.

The president also announced some ambitious goals for both the federal fleet, and for the national transportation and energy sectors overall. Among them are that 100 percent of the federal fleet be alternative-fuel vehicles by 2015, cutting oil imports by one-third from 11 million barrels a day by 2025, and generating 80 percent of the nation’s electricity from clean energy sources by 2035. The president also reiterated the goal to have one million electric vehicles on the road by 2015, spurred by federally-funded incentives for consumers, as well as research grants into advanced battery R&D.

Mostly because the oil that would be drilled would be owned by major oil companies and THEY would not be beholden to keep the oil in the U.S.
