Our problems in Vietnam started during WWll FDR had an agreement with Ho Chi Min after the Japanese were defeated America would back Vietnam know at the time as French Indonesia to keep the French from reclaiming the territory as a French Colony but he died before the war was over and Truman not aware of this backed our ally the French pissing off Ho Chi Min off which started the conflict for the French. Ho Chi Min a graduate of Harvard and who live for a while in Harlem considered America as a friend, but went to Russia for aid to help defeat the French. Kennedy being aware of this was negotiating with Ho Chi Min to abandon Communism and the Russians but he was killed before he finished. There are rumors that this is why he was killed because the Military Industrial Complex in America wanted the war to make money and having Kennedy negotiate a non aggression pact with Vietnam wasn't good for business.
