Why do people say if you don't vote, you can't complain? When was the last time we actually had a good presidential candidate?

I don't believe that any of the candidates this year represent what I stand for as an American. If I vote this year it would only net me a loss because I would be voting for a candidate that doesn't represent me. Therefor I will not be voting this time but I sure will be complaining about who ever wins because no matter who it is I lose.

To all the Americans that do not vote:

P.J. O’Rourke once said “Don’t vote, it only encourages the bastards.” While some people take those words to heart, I am writing you to ask that you change your mind for this one election. Think about
this, if everyone that didn’t normally vote went to the polls on November 6th, 2012 and voted for Gary Johnson, they would be responsible for electing the next President of the United States. People that believe they do not make a difference will have decided the election. That is true power. That is bucking the system at the finest.
Most non-voters believe that their vote is useless, since a single vote has no influence over the election. Without a tie, they believe their vote doesn’t matter. They believe voting is a waste of time and therefore stay home and let the chips fall where they may. Well if you believe that way, join us and actually make a difference. Wouldn’t you like to see Mitt Romney and Barack Obama’s faces when they announce Gary Johnson as the winner? They would be like ‘what the hell??’ and politics as we know it would be turned upside down.

Others believe their votes are insignificant because both parties are purchased by lobbyists, so their voice wouldn’t be heard even if they voted for the candidate that is trying to appeal to them. Well, Gary Johnson is not your typical candidate. While he was a Governor of New Mexico for 8 years and has the record and experience to back up a Presidency, he is also a Libertarian. He believes that people should be able to do what they want as long as they don’t hurt anyone. Imagine a President that will end the Drug War; that will end the IRS; that will allow people to live their lives as they see fit. YOU COULD BE PART OF THE MOVEMENT TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN! All is will take is your vote.
If you are one of the people that does not have a sense of civic duty to vote, I implore you to at least consider my proposal. You could make a difference in this election! You could have a vote that matters and you could also piss off the establishment at the same time.

If any of this appeals to you I ask that you take a chance and vote for Gary Johnson on November 6th, 2012. He will be on every ballot, so this scenario is possible. All I ask is that you think about it.

    Thank You

In this race, actually. But, most people don't know about him because the media decided that he wasn't a "serious" candidate...because he was an openly gay moderate Republican. Fred Karger would be amazing in the office, but no one has ever heard of him.

You have a point in that folks will complain even though they voted. The candidate that THEY voted for did not win. Folks that don't vote at all don't have reason to complain because they didn't bother to vote. So no matter who wins the non-voter has no reason to complain. They were willing to accept any candidate that won. So they are also willing to accept any agenda put foreth by the winner.

If you don't vote, you did nothing to change the outcome of the election, so by these people's rationales(I am one of them) you shouldn't complain.

Because voting allows one to be able to have a say in their approval/disapproval in a particular person or vote. And NOT voting just means that u really don't care one way or the other on how DEMOCRACY is run - plain & simple!

Because they haven't taken the time to educate themselves on what the issues are that matter, what the candidates stand for on those issues and what the role of govt should be in our lives. The last time we had a good Presidential candidate was a few months ago before Romney wrapped up the nomination. I support him over the alternative, but he was not my first choice. I am growing to like him though.

No one is going to like everything any candidate does.. you just weigh the pros and cons but you live with the end result anyway.
I think that in making history with this President and his overall approach to the problems that he has to face..made him initially a good candidate.
a lot of our reactions now are because of the results or lack of them after being in office.. but truthfully it was a long road and a task regardless of who got in..and sometimes we need to try to fill those shoes and admit... it's not for me.. let him do it. Lol

When was the last time we had a good presidential candidate? In every primary, we have exceptional candidates, on both sides actually. You have to take into account the views and ideals of each of the parties and the candidates they put forth. It is up to all of us to take the responsibility to get involved, and inform ourselves, and back the candidates who most closely represent our personal values and ideals.

because if you dont vote, then you really dont have a say when something goes wrong or the pres does something you dont like. but if youre going to vote at least be informed. too many voters go to the booth not knowing a damn thing about their candidates and where they really stand. please dont be ignorant when you do vote.

and someof the best presidents were gw bush and ronald reagan. recently. before that i would have to say abe lincoln. bush was an honest man and didnt spew abunch of bs about the former pres. he had class and wasnt an arrogant idiot like obama.

Well, that's a question for sure. The reason people say it is that each and every American voter has the right AND the responsibility to take an interest in the way this Republic is run. It is a Constitutional Republic in where the government representation is supposed to be voted on by the people, indicating their wishes for how their country is to be run. If a person does not care enough to do the homework necessary to find out which candidates most closely align with their values and ideals, and choose not to vote, how can they in conscience complain about a system in which they refused to participate? It is sort of like not buying a car and then complaining that you have to take the bus. If a citizen of this nation wants to make a change in our government, or even maintain the people we have in it, then it is encumbent upon them to become involved, do their homework, and responsibly place their vote where they feel it will do the best good.
