Why do people need more than one gun?

I have lived over 60 years and did not need one.My Dad lived 90 years and never needed one. When I was a kid I lived in a tough neighborhood. One of the first time I was allowed out to go play with a friend a Veteran on the street blew his head off.I saw him being put in rescue...great first outing. Maybe more movies with a love story may help, instead of all these that promote violence.VIOLENCE begets VIOLENCE.In last 60 he bought all the rounds of fire via internet and bought weapons in last 60 days.....HOW can this happen??? Gun do kill people!!!! God bless the dead and injured.

The tragedy is that you feel that way. I know about a dozen ways to kill you with a pencil. Should we outlaw pencils. The automobile is the nations greatest killer. Quick. Run out and outlaw cars. Things don't kill people. People kill people with things. I happen to like to collect firearms, particularly old ones. I also have a home defense weapon. A .357 loaded with alternating shot and solid rounds.

How many intruders have been stopped by someone shooting off their mouth

I don't think that should be up to you or anyone else if the owner is law abiding

I own 6 Russian World War 2 bolt action rifles and a Russian World War 2 revolver. I collect them and all of them are in firing condition. I go to the range monthly with them. My friends like to shoot them, so do I. I have never fired any of them at a human being and I have never joined in an insurrection against the Government. More people died in the back of Ted Kennedy's car than from my guns. I don't recall the Government restricting his right to drive or own a vehicle. I don't feel I and for that matter the vast majority of gun owners should be restricted. My guns are pieces of history, every time I shoot them I think of the incredible struggle the Russians mounted in World War 2. There are a lot of big "ifs" in this world, the overwhelming majority of people meet their markers, those that don't should pay the price. This shooter in Colorado should get the death penalty. The reaction of this guy's mother was scary, she knew what he was like and did NOTHING.

The shooter had no criminal record, therefore he was considered law abiding.

Perhaps the mental health laws that protect the mentally ill need changing as well.

That is a very interesting point and one I agree with. In the late 1970s someone decided that the mentally ill should be moved into the community. As a result a number of mental institutions closed and these people streamed in to the community. It was a disaster and the present soluution is group homes with supervision. There is a lasting legacy from this legislation and that is that it is virtually impossible to commit people for mental health reasons. The standard is if the person is a danger to himself or others. Unfortunately this man like many others fits the criteria after he has literally proved himselfwith an incident like this. The man's mother knew he needed help. I don't know if she tried,( I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on that) but her path would not be easy under current law. Thank you for your reply.

Tragic story. But I work in public safety....and listen to the Police radio all day... I know what goes on out there. This recent horrible tragedy in Colorado is a perfect example as to why people need guns... But the people who have them need to be trained properly how to use them...just imagine if one citizen had been armed at that movie theater...one well trained citizen...or one lucky shot from an armed citizen could have saved lives....its better to have a gun and not need it then to need it and not have it...I will keep my guns.

So could a man kill a movie theater worth of people with a pencil?
  • Don Leuty Ben~ Li... 2012/07/21 18:33:10

Stealth has its value. You can do them in without alerting the rest. Slower, but the end result could easily be a higher body count. It's not the tool, it is the person misusing it. Ask any street gang-banger. Guns are much easier to come by illegally than legally.

If that's so true than why is it that countries that have banned guns like Japan and Australia have a much lower gun crime rate?
  • Don Leuty Ben~ Li... 2012/07/21 18:39:32
    Don Leuty
They still have a gun crime rate because only the criminals have the guns. Japan was disarmed by MacArthur. Porn and guns were outlawed while he was the military governor.

It does not matter why he did it or who did it but that there gun crime rate is lower than ours. Yes there will always be criminals with guns but less people die when there is gun control.
  • Don Leuty Ben~ Li... 2012/07/22 20:14:23

Less people die from guns. Japan's use of the knife is more prevalent. You also seem to ignore the fact that all crime is significantly lower in Japan. There are many significant differences in child rearing and cultural pressures.

Violent crime and murder is a fraction of the percentage of what it is in the US. You can't take down a massive crowd of people with a knife.

Once again. It goes to culture. The poison gas attacks killed significant numbers. Once again, it is not the tool, but the person. Even a giant passenger plane can kill thousands at once. History has shown us that, but no one rushed to outlaw 757s or DC10s.
  • Ben~ Li... Don Leuty 2012/07/24 07:33:00

I don't think people need any guns....today was a tragedy of epic proportions. We need to stiffen our gun control laws and protect members of society. If doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses, etc. all have to undergo training, testing, interrogations, etc. to get their licenses, then people getting a gun better be next to perfect to earn that right. I am so tired of hearing we have the right to bear arms. This is not the 1890's. We need to live in a civilized world where weapons can't be bought easily. People should be able to go to the movies and not get slaughtered. I am heartbroken for the victims and their families. This is terrible!!!!! I do understand that many responsible people own guns. But if they tighten up on the laws, those people will still have their weapons but the people who will commit crimes won't get them. It will save countless lives.

there are some protective factors in place ,, felons cannot legally have weapons / folks with diagnosed mental illnesses .cannot ..

people should go through intensive training ( as does military & law enforcement ) now how about folks who can kill some one with their bare hands ..a baseball bat ..knife etc .

not to take away the tragety done here ...but .. come on here !

That's an old argument. Like cars don't kill, but you can't buy a car and just drive it without taking a test and getting a driver's license. You get sent to jail if you are found driving under the influence, speeding, or without a license. It helps keep crime down....no it doesn't stop some idiots from driving crazy on the road when most follow rules, but it helps.

I agree , and as a class a CDL holder 30+yrs OTR experience & 5 yrs (federally )certified driving instructor ..I know about a person operating any type of vehicle .I have seen many who barely passed the CDL test ..but with alot of practice became good drivers ..and cars as well ...some with problems souldnt drive cause of alcohol & or drug problems.,this isnt a perfect world BY FAR !

and about guns ... I went through military small arms courses , civillian cary & conceal cources / background checks ( state & federal ) and cary a GLOCK . and have semi auto & a permit for a fully auto also in my arsenol .(had it for 10 yrs ).????

and yeah ,,this was a tragic event (no doubt ) , we cant reverse it , but to say this should prevent all personal firearms purchases is outlandish !

I didn't say to outlaw all guns. I said to stiffen the laws so that only responsible law abiding citizens have firearms and make it harder to get them and that will eliminate some of the potential bad guys. If we save one life, it is worth it.

They can get guns on line. To buy a hand guns you take tests, fill out paperwork, get a license etc. machine guns like the kind used in this killing can be bought via the internet. That needs to be regulated.

The answer to these tragedies is MORE guns, not less. Consider what the date 9-11 would mean to us if American citizens hadn't been stripped of their HUMAN right to self defense prior to boarding airplanes.

Criminals, terrorists, nutters and tyrants ignore gun control laws. Only the law abiding follow them. Does it make sense to you that only criminals, terrorists, nutters and tyrants--and cops--should have guns?

This is the one question which gun (people) control advocates can't answer.
