It's because of what happened after the war, when the "carpetbaggers" came to the South. My family lost everything. They weren't slave owners but had a store. After the war, the confederate money was useless and they helped others by giving them food and provisions. I'm not like that, but my "older generation" relatives distrusted Northerners. It was a bit funny, but my boyfriend is from Mass. and a couple times I made a comment about the South and later about northerners. Finally, he asked, "Why do you keep saying that?" I was just messing around, but it was funny.

it is interesting. most of us who were born and raised in the north really don't have that painful history hard wired into us so we don't think about the civil war too much. when we run into it it takes us off guard a bit.

i understand why southerners hold resentment. i understand why blacks hold resentment...i hope we can work it out over time.

Yes, I hope so. Most Southerners don't feel that way but I think they almost have an innate distrust of Northerners. The good news is that, for instance, where I lived your hard pressed to find people who were born and raised here. There are so many people from the north who love it here. My ex husband was from New York and my boyfriend is from Boston. So go figure!

I can understand not wanting to bring up slavery (and whites, too were devastated by the civil war), but what about the 60's and the Civil Rights Movement? I'm old enough to remember seeing newscasts of police beating blacks with billy clubs and having dogs attack them. I remember segregation and the way blacks were treated back then, it was horrible. I still get the creeps thinking about the billboard that said "The Ku Klux Klan Welcomes You to North Carolina."

I don't believe in abortion, gay marriage or legalizing drugs. I do think that kids of illegal immigrants should be allowed amnesty because it's not their fault. If I were a conservative, I WOULD seek help and fast. I care about others.
