    I don't know any liberals who are afraid to say they're liberal, but I know plenty of people who claims OTHERS are liberals when they're NOT.

    It is all of the above that adds up to Liberal, Progressive, and even Democrat becoming a dirty word they don't want to be associated with...

    If you haven't noticed some of the most rabid of these here on SH and in the electorate are now abandoning these monikers and are calling themselves Moderates...it won't be long before that is a dirty word too...

    Yes, liberal in the classical sense. But George W Bush falls under liberal in the classical sense. I'm speaking about modern Liberalism or Progressivism which is descended from Fascism and Communism.

    Bush was not a free market believer, nor a believer in limited government. He paid lipservice like any good Republican, but that was about it.

    Bush does believe in the free market. Whatever he did counter to his ideology was concessions to the democrats. Presidents have to throw a bone to the other side thats how the beltway works.

    Because the word was demonized in 1980 by Saint Reagan. However, because that was 30 years ago, the word is starting to come back into acceptable affiliation.

    I am not a liberal or a conservative fully. Liberals say I am conservative, conservatives say I am liberal... Why do I have to be either one?

    Most likely because they are not, but some conservatives like to label anyone who disagrees with them a liberal, no matter what their view really is.

    i think because they are being called a Liberal and they are not a Liberal. I don't think many people even know what a Liberal is anymore...it's so overused by the nutty right it has no meaning (if someone is in disagreement with the right they are a Liberal I guess). Words like Communist, Marxist, Patriot and a lot of other words that get thrown around have no meaning...it has become background noise from the right wing...soon we will no longer even hear what you are saying...you will be successfully tuned out!
