Apparently because that was for those who were oppressed in their native lands in one way or another...They came here by LEGAL means and they have the opportunity to go as far as they wanted to go, they had freedom from tyrants, I know as my grandparents were immigrants who came here legally through Ellis Island. My grandfather was a coal miner and was instrumental in setting up the union and he rose in the ranks then one day in the 60's he came home and announced that he quit the union because it was corrupt. My other grandfather was Native American and he worked in a iron foundry and he too helped to set up the union and he also left at the same time period...now both had attempts made on their lives. This is just one example of how this nation has moved away from the greeting on the Statue of Liberty. The Conservatives are trying to rescue this nation from the same fate as Rome or even more recently Greece.

Unions are a lot different than they were in the 1960s. People like Jimmy Hoffa truly were criminals and their actions were justifiably condemned. I still believe that unions were responsible for assassinating Robert Kennedy because he worked so hard to rid unions of corruption. But even then the vast majority of union members were simply hard working people trying to provide their families with a little bit of security. I agree that even today unions are far from perfect, but I don't see any logic to condemning the hard working guy on an assembly line because of something he had nothing to do with.

And how are the conservatives trying to "rescue" this nation? In the past 30 years they have completely destroyed the most successful and prosperous economy our nation ever enjoyed, and now they make no secret of their goal of obstructing anything that might benefit the American people just so they can make the President look bad, no matter how many people have to suffer as a result. They oppose the American Jobs Act not because it costs too much and not because it's "big government" but because President Obama proposed it, and the 3 million people that would have a job today if they would simply stop blocking the bill are left to suffer for their political games.
