Why didn't the right bitch about the Patriot Act under Bush?

pepper5419 2013/06/11 18:44:13
All this crap about the government over stepping its bounds. The conservative right in the Supreme Court gave Bush the right to do everything the Obama adminstration is doing now.Where were you conservatives back when the Bush Adminstration was trampling on your rights?Fox TV and Right Wing Radio were siding with the Bush adminstration when the NSA,the TSA at airports, the IRS,and the CIA were all invading your privacy. Is it BC a black guy and not a white guy is in charge now?

I did, but then folks like you would discount that, right? Besides, NO PRESIDENT has abused the power of the office like this one since Lincoln's trampling of the Constitution (supposedly to save it--from what, I've always asked myself--itself?). Add the multiple due process and other scandals in the EPA, Fast and Furious, Benghazi, AP, IRS and even more scandalous abuses of power combined with failures to exert proper power (if that failure could--apparently hopefully, in The Zero's estimation--damage citizens--viz. Benghazi, fiats deliberately circumventing black letter law and crippling border security and immigration laws) to the revelation that the Obama administration has approved spying on citizens to an extent not even practiced by the Bush admin, and one can see why both Left and Right are demanding accountability (although one must note that quislings on both ends of the spectrum are excusing this behavior).

Of course, loading the question as you did, one can only assume that you are being disingenuous.

"Yes, I would vote to repeal the U.S. Patriot Act, although I would consider replacing that shoddy and dangerous law with a new, carefully crafted proposal that addressed in a much more limited fashion the legitimate needs of law enforcement in combating terrorism (for example, permitting a warrant for the interception of cell phone calls, and not just land-based phones to accommodate changes in technology".

I was against the Patriot Act under Bush, but this president has vastly expanded the very act he was against and yes I have a right to "bitch" about it. And by the way, why are you bringing race into the issue. This is about bad unconstitutional policy, not race.

As usual, squeaky wheels in the "minority party" team are taking the correct position against almost everything the presiding administration is trying to shove down our throats. As usual, the on the "majority party" team, who pretended to give a crap about pressing civil liberties issues eight years ago, are hypocritically wasting valuable opportunities playing the blame game and spending their time calling people hypocrites for inconsistently supporting the right position (today) the way they used to inconsistently support the right position eight years ago. A few years ago, the parties were switched, but the story was the same. A few years from now, the parties will switch again, but the story will remain the same, because inconsistent partisans everywhere are not only among the most loathesome and contemptible people on the planet, but also far too common.

Do you know who's really responsible for unaccountable government? Partisan asshats who refuse to help their political opponents hold their OWN administration's accountable. Eight years ago, Republicans and conservatives were the problem. Today, Democrats and liberals are the problem. As always, partisan asshats running interference for an out-of-control government are the real problem.

George W. Bush and Barack Obama have been equally horrible Presidents, and there is no excuse for anyone to defend this kind of unconstitutional behavior from any administration. If we're going to have any success overturning these abuses, we need to consistently stand against the police state no matter who is in power. JOIN, OR DIE.

Actually some of us did. But then again it was only used against outgoing calls to known terror states, not calls made between fellow citizens here in this country. It's one thing to look into someone dealing with other nations that want to hurt us. It's quite another to set up a program that collects data on every single person who has a cell phone, computer, website or is on the internet. This on the tail of a case where privileged information was used to reject organizations for tax exempt status based on nothing more than their political views by the IRS makes this administration look like Nixon 2.0.

As Bad As Bush? Obama’s Biggest ’08 Campaign Reversal

Broken campaign promises are nothing new. Candidates run on the list of things they would like to do — but it’s anyone’s guess what they’ll actually be able to accomplish when they reach office. Obama took that game to a whole new level. On top of his failures to accomplish most of his 2008 campaign goals, here’s a list of issues on which Obama did the exact opposite of what he promised.

    The U.S. PATRIOT Act

Six weeks after 9/11, a terrified Congress passed the U.S. PATRIOT Act, which widely expanded the government’s surveillance powers. The law allows the government to view your medical, library, academic, or other records without warrant; monitor your phone and email conversations without warrant; and serve “national security records” which demand information without judicial oversight and prevent recipients from even disclosing the request.

In 2005, then-Senator Obama spoke out against the PATRIOT Act on the Senate floor. He said, “This is legislation that puts our own Justice Department above the law. When national security letters are issued, they allow federal agents to conduct any search on any American, no matter how extensive, how wide ranging, without ever going before a judge to prove the search is necessary. … No judge will hear your plea; no jury will hear your case. This is plain wrong.”
Fast-forward six years. On May 26, 2011, Obama signed a two-year extension of the PATRIOT Act. This updated version tossed some of the civil liberty protections contained in the earlier version and in other drafts considered by Congress.

The Patriot Act was passed in the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Does anyone remember that day when all Americans came together for the good of our country. At the time it was the right thing to do as September 11th was the worst terrorist attack on American soil in history, killing nearly 3000 people. It was justified and made Americans feel safer which was important to do at the time. In 2011 Congress passed a four year extension and so it continues. The Patriot act was passed primarily to protect Americans from Terrorists, not from each other which is what Obama is doing. Pitting Americans against Americans, dividing this country more and more every day.

The patriot act was always a bad idea. It was always open to abuse and probably has been abused for a long time. Now we have a hero who has risked his life to bring this out. I'm well aware that people like Paul and Saunders opposed it from the start and still do.

I am only sorry that it took a man risking all to open the eyes of so many.

Note Obama says he was just trying to protect us from foreign "terrorists" and their supporters. I assume he believes it. He is wrong of course. Allowing programs like this to exists guarantees they will be misused. It is time to repeal the Patriot Act.

That's fine, I have no problem with that. It is probably unconstitutional and again because our government refuses to profile certain groups of people, we all have to suffer. The little old lady in a wheelchair at the airport, the infant in his mother's arms, the toddler who is crying because of the stranger patting him down and so it goes, on and on. The TSA at the airports is a joke and every week we read of the incompetence of these airport workers who don't do their job. Everything is out of control and I wonder if any of it is fixable. It sure doesn't seem that it is. Every day now we have an Obama scandal dujour and the thing that bothers me is that Obama was going to put a halt to so many things he hated about Bush but he just continues with most of what the left hates.. Makes me feel that they are all on the same team and we are the fools.

And only patting around the burqas of muslim clad women. They do not have a right to be racist when it comes to who they choose to pat down, but they sure as hell are. Like they can't be hiding anything under all that garb? But they want to molest our elderly and baby citizens and citizens in wheel chairs. Not offending vs. safety, and not offending muslims wins out over safety of our people.

We suffer because of theater. We've seen it time and time again the TSA misses the so called weapons. Besides if I was a nut I'd go after anything but an airplane. Which is in fact what we've seen. Sporting events, malls, and a lot of other stuff makes a better safer target. Heck just toss a small incendiary bomb onto an oil tanker truck while driving past and then blow it up and you'd do a lot of damage.

Well to be honest when this first started was right after 9/11/01 and the attacks the World Trade Center. To my knowledge Bush nor any of this administration or any department in the federal government ever used it to hunt down liberal/progressives. Bush was after the terrorist, which Obama will not even call a terrorist a terrorist. The proof of this is the Fort Hood shooter who is now on trial and collecting tax payers’ money for killing and wounding American soldiers on our homeland while the wound warriors cannot even get help with their medical bills. According to Obama, Bin Laden is dead and the terrorist have just faded away into the wood work. On top of that if there had been hint of scandal the liberal/progressive media would have had it on 24/7 broadcasting how Bush was shredding the Constitution. There is a lot of difference between hunting for terrorist and snooping on American citizens.

I have never been to their meetings, but I did take the time to go to one of their sites and I saw nothing that gave the impression of the KKK which was run by the Southern Democrats.
