Florida is full of Yankees, that is why. I'm from Virginia, but moved down here for a job around 15 years ago. My wife and I want to move back to a more gentle hearted state without so much rudeness, greed, and dangerous driving. However, the native Floridians we've met are very nice and speak a more melodious English.
As the third of six generations of Floridian, I can tell you that not all of us have lost it, mine is not very strong, some folks I run into its still as thick as Georgia mud puddle.
But the reason most of the people here don't have a southern accent is they're a bunch of yankees from the northeast. Hell all the kids in Cape Coral sound like they're from the friggin Bronx !
