Ok, it happened elsewhere because the earthquake machine malfunctioned, it was aimed at Canada… it misfired....

It really is too bad. The damage of the LA earthquake was so minimal compared to Haiti. The real problem is not where it hit, its that a place like Haiti could exist in the 21st century. Maybe its too much to hope for an end to that kind of poverty.

Well the plates that encircle haiti are very active as well as the ones in cali
    and other places
It can happen to us and it will eventually.
Don't let it cause you pain...yes it was horrible but nothing could of changed it the good thing is ...-if you can call it that- some people were saved.....it was and is a sad event many more will happen

Well I live in Australia, and the reason it couldn't happen to us is because Australia is in the middle of a tectonic plate. In other words, it's pretty much impossible for us to have an earthquake.

Actually we are due for a super quake in the midwest. In 1815 or somewhere back then there was one that changed the course of the Mississippi river, and only the native Americans were in the area at the time. Be careful what you ask about, it may happen.

It will. Its making its way around to here, you've just got to have a little patience. Hey maybe if we're lucky it will set off the mega super volcano under Yellow Stone park, which is over due to blow, now that's going to be something practically no one has ever seen. Aw just kidding about the "if we're lucky"...but just wait

I hear that one could cause a global ice age with the amount of ash it is predicted to eject into the upper atmosphere. At least 2 or 3 years of winter if that one blows, and 4 less states to worry about it.

It's just the way the inner plates of the earth shifted at the time. It can happen anywhere. I don't remember enough geology to know the details.

Plate Tectonics. The crust of the earth is on plates not just all one sheet. It's like patches wrapped around a round core. The movement of these plates causes major quakes. There is a process called subduction by which the edge of one plate slides under the edge of the other the pressure causing this is enormus but even so the surfaces involved are so rough and uneven that the sliding is uneven and sometimes sticks. When this happens the pressure builds up until what was stuck breaks and the plate shoots foward. Major earth quake. It's these areas called subduction zones where the really big ones happen. Guess what Hati sits on and we don't.. I do not accept any responsibility for spelling, my spell check is down.

Basically correct, but it appears that nowhere is safe from the effects of plate tectonics.

You are correct sir. Plate tectonics doesn't account for local fault ines among other things.

Well I doubt the transformation from Pangea to the modern world was very smooth either. Even the dinosaurs had to contend with big quakes.

Not to worry the ring of fire is being primed and we are so going to have more than "a" earthquake
