Why can you join the army when you're 18, but you can't drink until you're 21?

It never really made much sense to me. Men and women can join the army/military and fight in wars when they are 18, but they can't drink until they are 21!

To me, this is ridiculous. People tell me that anyone under 21 can't drink because they are only children, so they don't have good judgment. So, it's wrong for "children" to get drunk, but it's perfectly fine for "children" to fight in wars, see (maybe even cause) the carnage and corpses of a battlefield?

Every person I asked gave me this same answer. Maybe you can help "enlighten" me. Please leave your opinion

Heres my random point of veiw. If your going to get a college degree and get an educated job then the rule for waiting til age 21 for drinking relations should be followed. Now if you decide to join the army there is a possibility that you will die, this gives you full permissiong to buy a 6-pack and get drunk for deployment

As I am Australian and therefore allowed to drink at 18, I strongly disagree with the American drinking age. I actually drink very, very rarely. Maybe twice a month. When I turned 18, I had my crazy moments and by about 19, I was over it. However, in America, people don't have their crazy times till they are about 21, which is way too old to be focusing on partying when you should be thinking about careers and families. I think that it's naive to think that kids will not drink if they are not legal. I think that America needs to realize that they do have a war on drugs but it should be focused on alcohol. Alcohol is the most socially acceptable drug ever invented that kills thousands and thousands more then drugs do.
