Last time it happened, Bill Clinton was President and Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House. Next week, it could happen again. Congress has one week to solve its latest fiscal deadline or face a government shutdown.

Reid: “America will know exactly who to blame, Republican fanatics in the House and the Senate.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid rejecting a motion by Texas Republican Ted Cruz to quickly approve a House passed spending bill that defunds the Affordable Care Act.

Cruz: It is our obligation to our constituents to do everything we can to prevent the majority leader from funding Obamacare.”

Cruz calling on Republican colleagues to join a filibuster, but GOP Leader Senator Mitch McConnell announcing he will not help block the House passed bill.

We have to stop spending like we have been spending!!!!

The moron in the White House, backed by Harry the doofus, think raising the National Debt from $8 trillion to $16.7 trillion in 5 years is a good thing. The moron in chief thinks raising the debt limit doesn't raise the debt. How many credit card companies would see a customer spending in such an out-of-control manner and send them a letter saying "Good job! We're going to increase your limit, because we know that you won't keep spending like you have been spending"?

Every year I was with the Army the thing to do every summer was start figuring out what we could spend the rest of our appropriation on, because if we didn't spend it, then the given was that "congress would think we didn't need it and cut our appropriation next year", This kind of thinking in every branch of the government is why we have a $16.7 trillion debt and growing.

As far as appropriations for government, It's time to cut, cut, cut and cut some more ... and repeat it every year from this day forward!!!

The Democrats AND Obama gave us the shutdown. They chose the shutdown rather than give up their precious Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP). The Continuing Resolution to fund the government and keep it open that was presented by the Republicans stipulated that Members of Congress, their staffs and nobody less than the President, Vice President and top administration political appointees would be subject to Obamacare in the same Exchanges and under the same rules they have imposed on the rest of us peons.
But every Dem in the Senate voted against that reasonable CR from the Republicans to keep the government open just to protect their exclusive privileged special exemption from Obamacare. The rest of you are denied membership into this posh country club.

All Republicans want to do is defund a train wreck. obama is not willing to negoiate or even to make amendments to obamacare...he is not willing to do anything on the subject. How, with this in mind, can anyone say it's the republicans that are at fault here? Ridiculous! People need to stop with the blind worship attitude and see who's really at fault here. How and why was obamacare even passed. Who out there has anything good to say about this law????

    This is why
    1. The Affordable Care is the law of the land
    2. The Supreme Court has determined it is Constitutional
    3. The President won’t sign a bill to repeal

So why are some Republicans willing to put everything on hold if they don't get what they want. Sen. Cruz had his filibuster then turn around and voted for it! Uh?

Slavery was also the law of the land, was it not? So was prohibition, Separate but Equal and DOMA.

    Should we have kept those?

This is not Jim Crow nor is it Slavery. People are not being hung in trees, chained beaten and raped. But this is our sad part of American history.

People weren't being "hung in trees, chained beaten and raped" when DOMA was the law of the land. Same for Prohibition. Should we have kept those?
It used to be the law of the land that only land holder could vote.

The point that you miss is that being "the law of the land" does not mean that it is a good law. Many laws of the land have been repealed because they did more harm than good. The ACA is one such law. Good intention, bad outcome.

Respectively, how can we measure the outcome of something we haven't tried. Jim Crow, Slavery and Prohibition had a measured outcome it was good before it was bad. Hey! I was wrong when I believed that WMD's, 911 were main reasons we when to war. I have be proven wrong.

You ask "how can we measure the outcome of something we haven't tried"? It's not too hard.
    1. The lies; Obama said that rates will go down. They didn't. Everybody from the CBO on down has pointed out that insurance rates will soar. Obama said that if you like your insurance, you can keep it. Companies are dropping people from their insurance and telling them to go to the exchanges. It's cheaper to pay the fine.
    2. There are loopholes built into the law that allow companies with less than 50 people or employees that work less than 30 hours to not provide insurance. Surprise! Companies are taking advantage of these loopholes. People are having their hours dropped to 30. In an act of egregious flippancy Nancy Pelosi said that it was good because people will now have more time to "pursue their passions". (when they're not trying to make up for the loss in income)
    3. The doctor shortage. Even before the ACA was dreamed of we were going to have a doctor shortage of 20,000. With ObamaCare that is expected to QUINTUPLE. http://www.forbes.com/sites/s... That's a shortage of 100,000 doctors. what good is having health insurance if you can't find a doctor or if you do, waiting months for an appointment.

If you're driving full throttle towards a brick wall and people are warning you that ...

    1. Why isn't it the "law of the land" for federal workers, Congress and the President? This is a violation of the 14th Amendment. You know, equal protection under the law?
    2. Justice John Roberts redefined the law as a tax against the intent of the shadowy committee that wrote this catastrophe in the first place. So we have a contradiction being passed off by the Washington establishment as "Constitutional". Big fail guys. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
    3. Obama won't repeal it but he can exempt business' for a year as well as exempting union and campaign cronies by decree. Law of the land? Fail Caesar!

Ted Cruz and House Republicans sent a Continuing Resolution (CR) to the Senate to fund Obamacare along with the rest of the government ONLY if federal employees, Congressmen and even the President himself agree to give up coverage by their precious Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) and enroll in Obamacare through the mandated insurance exchanges we peasants are being railroaded into. Naturally they said "let them eat cake" and now we have the shutdown.

The Constitution says the House holds the purse strings. They write the bills. If the spoiled brats in the other two answers don't like that they are not getting all the goodies they want, too bad. Dirty Harry Reid won't even discuss the issues with the Decepticons. Yet he used to constantly whine about open dialog...

There is very, very, little compromise from this president. If you don't vote his way, you are either blocked from the vote or you are over-rided. He never had the full support of the people on Obamacare and not one Republican voted on it is my understanding. He needs to compromise as this was completely done by the Democrat.

When you have a hard headed occupant in the WH and a little snarfy creep in the Senate doing his bidding, the problem lies with the Democrats. There is no flexibility or compromise. The checks and balances in the Constitution are throw to the wind. The Advise and Consent of the Senate is lacking. Even Balmy's friend, Warren Buffet said that the Obamacare bill should be trashed and there should be a reworked bill with created by bipartisanship. All the maneuvering in DC in this situation is aimed to hurt only we, the people. You can bet that our hirelings will not miss a paycheck!
