It will depend on whom you ask. Romney supporters will spin them in his favor even if he falls on his face, or has one of his frozen moments after being asked a question he would rather not answer, like one about his tax returns.
Obama will be his usual unflappable self, standing tall and delivering well-thought-out answers. Romney's performance will depend on his ability to recite his programmed answers, and on his ability to resemble a human being instead of a plank of wood.
Why would they do that? He has never used one in a debate, and he usually does very well. He is very good at thinking on his feet.
All politicians, except for Bill Clinton, use teleprompters for speeches. Obama writes his own speeches and then they are loaded onto teleprompters. Not many people can remember a 45-minute speech word for word, except for Ron Paul, and he rambles incoherently. He needs one.
You can be eloquent and stutter on occasion, I do not know of anyone who gets their lines out right every time. Besides, these are questions of preparation and exhibitation and not of content. Obama is less prone to pull the types of gaffes that the conservative candidates this time around are known for
The title of the video is pretty misleading, if that stuttering warrants ending a presidency than the younger bush would have been drawn and quartered for his poor speech
Romney will win on the facts and rational answers, but the touchy-feely emotional feed will go to Obama. The liberal press asking the questions will spin and distort the questions to make it seem that Obama has the edge, and the day-after analysis by the MSM will claim Obama won.
Just curious why would it matter? A good debater can win any question. It was one of the things we worked on. I had to debate a side I didn't like or a question that favored others. A skilled orator doesn't need the line of questioning to be catered to them.
Good point. Sounds like you had a good teacher. When I took debating class, it was expected that a good debater would be thoroughly versed in all sides of an issue and knowledgeable about every conceivable position from any point of view. Made the preparation quite lengthy and deepened the study of a topic. Really forced the students to do critical thinking. I don't believe that very many teachers stress this today. Most seem to expect their students to take a positon on one side and debate that.
I did. When we debated hot topics, I studied like hell. I tried to come up with every conceivable argument. I essentially argued their side to better improve mine. The teacher would sometimes put the topics in a hat with the sides already chosen and you had to debate what you drew. Sometimes we had time to prepare, other times they were short on the spot debates. If you drew pro-life you had to argue it whether you agreed or not. He was a hard ass. LOL
I won my first debate in my 9th grade speech class. The trick isn't to be well-versed in everything, but to have a good, general insight and be LIGHT ON YOUR TOES...or being able to think on your feet. I have a couple of friends that play a game of trading barbs. It requires that one be on their toes and thinking because there is NO mercy. It is great exercise for a debate, because THINKING is the key element. When we expect members of a debate to be absolutely, and totally versed in all subject matter, WE are being unrealistic. The holder of the Oval Office is privy to information that the other candidates are NOT privy to. When the panel asks easy questions of their guy and impossible to answer questions of the other(s), you wind up with a farce. This is what I expect of these debates. The media has boosted Obama from day-1 and I expect it to continue. I just remembered that in all of the classes where I debated...I won. I do not always win when trading barbs with my friends.....these people are brutal. Fortunately, I get my digs in and we all cringe when we get had. It is a great deal of fun and is part and parcel to being a 'smart-ass'. I encourage this behavior in children that I am in contact with, with that admonition that RESPECT is PARAMOUNT.
I think the debates will be fair. I think people are already hedging their bets because they know Romney is not quick on his feet. Its just an opinion, but Romney comes across as very wooden and stiff.
The media has given and is giving Obama an unfair and gentle treatment because the media considers itself in the "Kingmaker" realm. Obama is the 'chosen' of the media elite. The elite is the enemy by the way! I recently read a textbook, for a class that I took, from cover to cover. THAT is unusual for me. It is called; "The Irony of Democracy". It puts the subject of 'Elitist's in perspective, and it is NOT a pretty picture. go to your local library and take a look at it. I paid $117 for my copy......the library is a tad cheaper. Everybody is wooden and stiff when thrown into a new situation. I do not support Romney, but I want Obama and his crew GONE! If it were only these two, I would support Romney, but I do NOT subscribe to either the Demmican or Republicrat plan.. It is the "ELITIST" thingie again. The leaders of both major party's have a tacit agreement and that is to PRETEND to be at odds, but to NOT surrender the power. The 'troops', as in everyday people are nothing more than tools to maintain the facade that we see. It is 'theater' for our consumption and it is bright enough to blind us to what is really taking place.
Because moderators can lob softball questions at one candidate and gotcha questions at the other. It's been done. I just want them to be fair and hear what each candidate has to say on the issues.
What is a gotcha question? Like asking someone who claims to read newspapers to name one paper she reads? Thats not a gotcha question thats normal follow up. A good candidate is prepared from all angles and if they don't know something they should say simply...I honestly don't know, this is why I plan to appoint knowledgeable people to help me when I don't know. There is no such thing as a gotcha question in my opinion. If I claim to have read the bible a lot, I better have a favorite verse. If I claim to be an expert on English Lit, I better know about Gredel and the Canterbury tales. If I claim to be an expert on healthcare, I better have some knowledge.
