Who told you life was fair and someone owed you something?

Gracie - Proud Conservative 2012/08/10 01:35:49
My father was from a very early era compared to my friend's parents. He was 53 when I was born and by the time I left home he had had children living at home for a whopping 50 years! We were taught that life was what you made it, it was your choice and you lived and died by those choices. Bad things happen to good people and good things can happen to bad people. Life isn't fair and no one owes you anything. If you want something or want to be something, you go for it and you achieve it. Don't envy what others have that you weren't willing to work for. I thought that was the message from all responsible parents but either they've forgotten it or were never taught it.

So, is that what you were taught and if not, how is it wrong?
You!

I don't feel anyone owes me anything. the views of our parents, at least as I've found out, were narrow minded and judgemental

I think their views are more relevant than ever, at least mine.

After complaining to my father about my mother, he told me "You get the parents you get, but the ones you might want. You just get what you get."

When we farmed, you couldn't take a day off. Everything had to be fed and cows had to be milked and when the cherries were ripe, you had to pick them right then. Hay had to be cut and baled at a certain time.
    You couldn't put it off.
We didn't get a paid vacation. If you didn't work you didn't get paid. That should be everybody's mentality.
When my mom wasn't working on the farm, she drove school bus. My dad was in Viet Nam. Twice.
I picked fruit for my school clothes and mowed orchards.
Life was only fair if you did your fair share! Someone only owed me something when I worked for them.
That's the way life should be.

Nobody. I was told the opposite by my best friend's father who was an orthopedic surgeon, in the 6th grade while discussing how unfair it was for a particular group of girls in our class to be continually picked to fill class govrnment postions, cheerleading positions, etc. Another of my best friends, her father-a veternarian- told us the same thing later in the same week. We were lucky to have heard this from educated adults who impressed on us the value of a good education in leveling the playing field. We all got the message.

My dad says the same thing..He can only help me in some matters but eventually, I have to walk alone..I think the only person who owes me is myself..I need to take care of myself, my needs, my wants, my whims..and my success and my failure, I'm responsible for it all..Then I need to teach my kids that :)

It is not wrong Those are American values. This new message of hope and change has been passed around before by every dictator who ever manged to bamboozle the people. Only the very pathetic ones fall for it only to be crushed under the heel of the person they thought would save them.
    American values

Do you mean, "we try and make the successful take care of the failures"? We do need to take care of those who truly cannot take care of themselves. However, we need to stop taking care of people who choose not to try.

Simple answer, did I say this?
"Do you mean, "we try and make the successful take care of the failures"?

    NO

    I said this
Life isn't fair and never will be.
But we do try to take care of our own citizens..

And I'm not in the mood to play your stupid games.

And my question to you is by what means do we take care of our citizens? That could mean any number of things and the insult wasn't necessary.

I don't consider saying "you were having Comprehension issues" an inslut and I explained why already too...

    This isn't true;
"we try and make the successful take care of the failures"?
    That in itself is offensive..

EVERY taxpayer pays take care of our poor, etc..
The Wealthy pay a lower percent then most middle-class in taxes..

So are we playing games again.

Where did I ever say we had a wealth tax?

    I didn't!

    I said:
"The Wealthy pay a lower percent then most middle-class in taxes.. "

I won't say what I should to be polite to you.. Try the same and not insult my intelligence with stupid crap..

Maybe the government should stop beating up on businesses and investors so that they have more opportunity. They could also always improve their skill set. That typically works as well. Blaming others never does it.

I bet a quick glance at their decisions would clear that all up for you. To escape poverty you need to finish high school, don't have children before you're 19 and married. That's all you have to do, but should you screw up before that, you can always have a second, third and unlimited chances to do better. You do have to want to do better. Our poor in America are the world's rich. Our poor have things I never had growing up.
