"Consumers for the first time got federally approved rules guaranteeing their right to view what they want on the Internet. The new framework could also result in tiered charges for web access and alter how companies profit from the network.

The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday voted 3-2 to back Chairman Julius Genachowski's plan for what is commonly known as "net neutrality," or rules prohibiting Internet providers from interfering with legal web traffic. President Barack Obama said the FCC's action will "help preserve the free and open nature of the Internet."

Oops Wrong Vote. Definitely Government. If corporations were in charge of the internet they would eventually make us pay through the nose. Internet provider pricing from large providers like Time Warner and Comcast are already through the roof.

The citizens of the world should control the internet. But when it comes down to the government vs the corporations, I’ll take the government. The government is for the people and no one party owns the entire system. The corporations aren’t even for their employees; they’re for the top executives. Plus, it’s the corporations that buy out the politicians, corrupting our government.

I do not trust corporations to act for the best interest of any one other than themselves on any and all subjects. This is one of the concerns I have when, there is such a push to minimize governmental involvement in regulating the functioning of our nation. This country was built upon government. How sedated would you have to be to think this nation could function with corporate management?

Not even a hard question. The Government should have total control, because if corporations had control, they would charge us like crazy as they limit what we could do.

That's what I mean, the market is the people. It's those how buy services from companies who must compete on cost and level of service. If you have the government control it, they chose the winner based on politics. If you have corporations control it they want to divide up consumers by region so they don't have to compete.

If you force corporations to compete with reasonable government regulation it's the people who win.

Calling someone an idiot doesn't further the discussion. You really have no clue what you're talking about.

If you'd go to school and take an econ or marketing class you learn that a corporation's "market" isn't the corporation itself, it's the consumers of their products and services.

What's the market for milk? It's not the farmer, it's the consumer. Get it?

Not too difficult for most thinking people to understand.

I would have said neither but I was not given the choice. The government should regulate the internet, not control it. Especially the government should issue an order to NEUTER, VASCECTIMIZE, HISTORECTIMIZE all of the writers of viruses, worms, trojans and other internet pests. I was not aware that anybody owns it, though clearly people own servers and websites. If corporations controlled it, nobody would be able to afford it.

Only in so far as to regulate and watchdog for abuse from corporations. However, I'm skeptical that any government committee set up to do this won't be corrupted by money from big corporations.

Corporations would likely limit my access to sites that run counter to their profitability. Would we prefer that corporations control television or radio, which is currently controlled by the FCC?

    Eh... tough call.

I'd say that the government should have some measure of control, yes, and there should be strict laws that govern some internet interactions (interactions that involve threats, commerce in general, interactions with children...) but ideally, the internet should be free.

Given only the 2 choices, I'd rather have its inventor control it rather than the corporate interests that would just make it incredibly expensive. It was brought about through research and design done both in the military and the public higher education sectors.

Is this a trick question? You left out a very important choice, the people! Let the free market decide, the last thing the Internet needs is control by the government!

Corporations are the enemy of small business. There is nothing they won't stoop to in their self interest, and that means killing the competition and making "the people" pay out the ass. The logic of industrialism is infinite expansion and concentration of control (and profits) into a few hands. Fascism is the brain child of the corporation. The political consequence is fascist military dictatorship. That is hardly what I call a free market.

In this day and age, corporations are the inevitable result of the free market left on its own.

The problem with that is that "free market" is a myth. Once anything enters the market big corporations snap it up. They give all of the jobs to slave laborers in the third world and they make "the people" pay out the ass. And they hire lobbyists in Washington to make sure things STAY that way. When Republicans cry "free market" that is what they are selling you: Corporate FASCISM.

I don't agree. Actually things are a lot cheaper than they were years ago, look at electronics, or Lasik surgery, clothing prices have been pretty stable and though food prices have increased slightly the increases haven't been unweildly. Telephone prices are down gas prices are still low when adjusted for inflation. I do agree there is a problem with government colusion with industry but that is more a corruption of our government than corporate facism.

    What a tough choice... really.

I'd so no to the government because they could try to control what is available like China does (like how members of the military can't even view websites that have published a WikiLeaks cable, so stupid). They obviously have the capability to do so and that is a scary premise.

I don't trust corporations any more than the government because they have the capacity to do the very same thing. I guess since they're a bit more greedy they'd want more people to have access and therefor they'd make more money.
