I thought he was the most interesting Captain.

William Shatner as the original James T. Kirk
Captain Kirk will always OWN that character role. Every captain after that was a tweaked version or synthetic attempt at being something similar or different.

The original series will always be the pinnacle of the concept. That was because it was an organic outgrowth of the heady days of the 1960's, when everything seemed almost within reach. Projecting out from the trends, we had no doubt that we would see interplanetary travel by 2000. From that, the invention of gravity warping would somehow be invented and interstellar travel would be possible within the time frame of the original Star Trek. The characters on the original Star Trek featured MEN and WOMEN! Not the feminist B.S. of androgynous characters on later Star Trek franchises.

Looking about, the fields that once grew a bumper crop of national industrial prowess are now barren and full of worthless weeds. There is NO F-ING WAY you can go to space with an underemployed nation of burger flippers, swindlers, debt slaves, porn site developers, Wal-Mart employees, and H1-B visa holders dominating the make believe world of the internet.

I'd rather serve under Picard and hang out with Kirk than the opposite... More chances of survival in the first instance and a lot more fun in the second! ;o)

Do you know why Shatner had all those pauses in his dialogue? Because he kept forgetting his lines! It was not just part of his acting style.

The sadly late, great Dwayne McDuffie (head writer of Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited cartoons, Static Shock!, Ben 10: Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, and quite a few comic books including being the co-founder of Milestone Media) told of an incident in which he was at a Chicken & Waffles restaurant near where a comics and SF convention was, taking a break from the convention (which he was a featured guest of), enjoying a meal.

At a nearby table, a family with children who were acting a bit restless was also eating, but soon the father of that family told them to sit down (exact words, according to Dwayne: “You will sit down. You will eat. You will neither rip, nor run.”), so authoritatively that the sheer authority in his voice reached out and affected all within the sound of it, including McDuffie. He felt afraid to get up and leave himself when his meal was done.

The father of that family was none other than Avery “Benjamin Sisko” Brooks.

McDuffie closed his anecdote with: “I’m still in the restaurant.” ;-D

(R.I.P., Dwayne! You left us all too soon!)

Did you click the blue text in my post? That takes you to the actual thread in Dwayne’s old “The VHive” forum. I was a participant in that thread as well, under this same handle (which I use almost everywhere online), which is why I remember it so vividly.

I believe he was in a few... He was also a Playboy bunny.

I know....but early on when Playboy was in it's infancy they had some male bunnies to serve as 'escorts' for the real bunnies. He kept his 'costume' from then as well.

Kate Mulgrew is a fine actress, but her character in that series was lousily written (actually, the whole series was).

Here’(s/re?) my favorite role(s?) of hers:

Haven't a clue as to what roles those characters represent. I remembered her from a soap called 'Ryan's Hope'.

I liked Shatner as Kirk; and like the Kirk character.

But, I also always thought it was wrong that Kirk beamed down everywhere. The Enterprise would pull up on a planet, Kirk would grab the bridge crew and beam down, leaving the 4th or 5th in command. When the Next Generation came out, and I saw Picard hardly ever leaving the bridge, I felt it made more sense.

Of course, none of the other Captains followed suit, as Sisko, Janeway, and Archer all beamed/took a shuttle everywhere.
