Who do you think should have more power the elected government or the Supreme Court?

In my country in the last little while there have been a few cases of the courts weighing in on what many people say are political issues that are outside their jurisdiction due to the fact that the court is largely liberal while the government is conservative. This has lead to a lot of questions about how much power the courts should have over political events, so I was wondering about what you thought. Should the Supreme Court as the guardians of the constitution have power to control the state or should the real power stay in the hands of the elected government?
