Also, Americans are SCARED of that off-mic moment with Dimitri Medvev of Russia and what Pres. Obama meant. If he meant what he said, Americans have reason to believe that he's got his own agenda and it is NOT representing the interests of America.
The polls show that if the election were held today, Mitt Romney would prevail. Not the polls of registered voters (the ones that MSNBC and ABC use), but the polls of LIKELY voters. Polls of people who are quite likely to vote in the election are more accurate than polls of just people who are REGISTERED to vote.

Facts are such stubborn things
Add to that the fact that by the poll numbers, it is obvious that the Republicans have stalled and stonewalled the economic recovery well enough to convince a great many low information voters (Faux News fanatics) that it's all Obama's fault. That was their stated "hugest priority"--not to help the nation recover, but to limit Obama to a single term.
You are correct about the loss of moderates in the Republican Party. Eisenhower, and probably not even Reagan, would be electable in today's Republican Party. Reagan raised taxes several times, and Eisenhower warned us about an incestual relationship between Congress and the Military Industrial Complex.
Upper hand seems to revolve around bad press and super pac money.
