Who Do You Blame for This Country's Economic Woes?

You’ll have to pardon Republicans if they snigger a bit at an essay penned by Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine for the latest issue of U.S. News & World Report, in which the former Virginia governor says blaming his party for America’s economic mess is a mistake.

“In 2008, Americans voted for change—for a Democratic president and Congress that would put the needs of middle-class families above special-interest priorities,” Kaine wrote. “Now Americans are again taking stock of their leaders. They are asking: What do we have to show for the last two years? The answer: quite a bit.”

As the relentless drumbeat of warnings about a potential congressional takeover by the GOP next week continues, Kaine wants to set the record straight about his party's role in our economic crisis.

“President Obama and Democrats in Congress stopped the health insurance industry's worst practices,” he explained. “As a result, no child can be denied insurance because of asthma and no mother's insurance will be rescinded because of breast cancer. They ended billions of dollars in wasteful subsidies to student-loan companies, redirecting that money to college students and universities. Now more American students can pursue a college degree. They stopped taxpayer bailouts of Wall Street and enacted new legislation to protect families from unscrupulous lending practices by banks and credit card companies. As a result, our economy is more stable and American families' finances are better protected.”

Despite all that, Kaine acknowledged that the electorate is unsatisfied, mostly because so many people remain unemployed. But putting the blame solely on Democrats is not the answer, he insisted. He praised his party for pulling the country out of the abyss after “nearly a decade of failed GOP leadership,” which he said got us where we are today.

“While congressional Democrats took vote after vote on the basic financial reforms needed to rebuild our economy... congressional Republicans held strategy sessions with Wall Street lobbyists, devising new ways to defeat or delay those reforms,” he said, finally pointing a specific finger at what he claims are the party’s differing priorities.

“Indeed, if Republicans win this fall's elections, they have made it clear that they will pursue the same wrongheaded policies that got America into an economic mess in the first place.”

In the end, he wrote, the choice is moving forward with Democrats or going back to the future with Republicans?

Do you think Kaine is right?

I'd lean more to blaming the Republicans if the Dems hadn't controlled the house since 2006. Knowing that... and the fact that the Progressives want to destroy this nation in order to rebuild it to their liking... there's no question the Dems are to blame.

The president can only sign or veto a bill passed by Congress

Republicans controlled Congress for 12 years; 6 years under Clinton and 6 years under Bush. They created a total of 1.25 trillion dollars of public debt and had an average unemployment rate of 4.61 percent.

Reid and Pelosi controlled congress for a total of 45 months; 24 month under Bush and 21 months under Obama. They created 3.6 trillion dollars of public debt and had an average unemployment rate of 7.18 unemployment rate.

You got that right. While I'm not a fan of the bailouts I think they were necessary. If GM and Chrysler had failed, Ford would have gone down as well as all the feeder jobs to those companies. I would have preferred the banks be broken up. Too big to fail is still an issue. No company should be too big to fail.

A Democrat controlled congress approved it or else George Bush could not have signed it. I think Tarp was a good idea at least the original part of it.

Kaine's a tool. No doubt the Republicans did their fair share in putting the US in submerging water - but the Democrats have in turn turned that into the titanic. You had your chance Democrats (not however thanks to me) - we now know why you're just the communist party in drag.

I blame both at different times and at different levels.
To me, the bottom line is this:
The Democrats have had a filibuster proof Congress for most of 4 years. They've had a Democrat President for 2 years. Even though the Republicans wouldn't support them in anything, the truth is that THEY(the Democrats) could've done anything they wanted to do without the Republicans. They had a filibuster proof majority for crap sake!
For 4 years, they have had a condition in Congress that any party would sell their children to have; the ability to do anything they want. Calling the Republicans the party of NO is a cheap excuse for not being able to get along with your own. Everyone knows that.
The Democrats are most to blame for this because THEY have the power to do anything they want within their own party. And they can't do it. Pathetic!

Well, not necessarily. Unlike Republicans who opposed anything and everything together, regardless how good the legislation was, the Democrats are more diverse with several representing conservative areas. Sometimes I think the Democrats by themselves are like have two parties.

Well, says them. Have you listened to the Republican retoric since last Tuesday? The primary goal is to save the Bush tax cuts and defeat Obama in 2012. That is hardly a solution to America's problems. I hope that is what they go for. It will be further proof they are not interested in solviing our problems.

They both are to blame. This stuff has been going on for decades, we all get mad at one party (demo, repo), when in truth they are both at fault. What we should be talking about is getting rid of the Federal Reserve, they are the true robbers. And they (F.R.) are the ones calling the shots. When Federal Reserve was created in 1913, it was then that our country was hi-jacked. When we talk about taking our country back, the talk is always about voting demo or repo. That is why nothing has changed and won't change. Because we are not attacking the real problem.

This is true to an extent. This is what the tea party has said this past year and 1/2. Of course, the talk gets turned to "taking it back to what?? Slavery?" A strawman argument... but fiscal responsibility and a MUCH smaller government is very much in order.... (and aboloshing the FR, IRS and getting out of the UN).
