It's Jon Huntsman Sr, right Harry?

by kosFollow

Harry Reid's source. Probably.

Harry
Reid has a Republican source who has told him that Mitt Romney didn't
pay taxes in 10 years. Who could he possibly known that would have that
information?

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman's dad sounds like the likely source.

Jon
Huntsman Sr, is business partners with Robert C. Gay, who also happened
to be Bain's managing director between 1989 and 2004. And if anyone
knows the machinations Bain used to evade taxes for itself and its
partners, well, it would be the guy in charge of the firm's finances.

Huntsman
is also a Republican and a Mormon (like Harry Reid). As governor of
next-door Utah, his son (who also served in the Obama administration as
ambassador to China) likely developed a close working relationship on
regional issues.

Want more? The Huntsman family gave some serious scratch to Reid's reelection campaign:

Indeed,
the Huntsmans have long been Reid supporters, although the former
governor, who is scheduled to be be in Nevada on Friday, has never given
directly to Reid's Senate campaigns.

[Jon Huntsman, Jr's]
parents and a couple of his brothers (Peter, James) and some in-laws
have. And his Dad even helped the Nevada Democratic Party ($5,000) in
2008. I’m told Reid has known the senior Huntsman since the 1990s and is
friendly with the son, too.

Here’s a list of the donations from the GOP candidate’s family to Reid (with help from CQ MoneyLine):
Jon Huntsman, Sr., Karen Huntsman $9,600 (2/4/09)
Peter, Brynn Huntsman $9,600 (12/31/09)
James, Marianne Huntsman $4,600 (11/30/09)
Jon Huntsman, Sr. $2,000 (11/2/04)

Sure, the evidence is circumstantial, but still pretty solid, wouldn't you say?

5:13
PM PT: Reid said his source was a Bain investor. Not sure if Huntsman
Sr fits the bill just yet, but Bain has certainly invested in Huntsman:
Huntsman
Corp. Friday announced a deal in which venture capital firm Bain
Capital Inc. will invest more than $600 million in Huntsman.

5:33 PM PT: Great point, from the comments:
Remember it was a Huntsman daughter who penned
an
article at HuffPo with Ryan Grim that had sources saying Romney would
have never ran if he knew he had to open up his tax filings.
Does the Huntsman family talk Romney's taxes around the dinner table?
by Jacoby Jonze

5:42 PM PT: The blogger Cannonfire came to this conclusion last Sunday, and his reasoning is far more developed than mine.
Now he thinks it's Jr, but his reasoning makes me even more convinced it was one of the Huntsmans. My money is still on Sr.

7:35
PM PT: Oooh, I had forgotten that Huntsman is skipping the GOP
convention, certainly pointing to a major rift with his party and
nominee.

Harry got the tip from his "imaginary friend". It must be the same "imaginary friend" who gave Joe McCarthy his list of 205 Communists back in 1950.

If it's a lie, Romney could end this in 5 minutes by releasing he returns. It's no longer a matter of whether he HAS to or not. He MUST release them at this point or the issue will dog him throughout the campaign right up to November. That is, if the GOP even lets him get that far. I'd be willing to bet the powers that be in the GOP are already pressuring this guy to either release the returns or withdraw from the election.

He shouldn't HAVE TO. For a sitting Senator to get away with this "Guilty until you prove yourself innocent" crap on the Senate floor is a DISGRACE. That he has not been censured, and that Obama has not denounced this blatant McCarthyism shows that the Democrats will stoop to any level to win this election.

I appreciate your opinion but I disagree with you. Romney should release his tax returns. We all know he's rich beyond anything we can imagine. All we want to know is that he paid his fair share of taxes like the rest of us. I don't think that is too much to ask of someone who wants to be our President.

Could be. But my guess is someone in John McCain's circle. Romney was on the VP list and was invited to the Arizona ranch, where he laid out his tax record for McCain. Shortly after that he was booted from the VP list and McCain has never said why. Apparently a big red flag went up. I don't know if it was McCain, but my bet is on someone who worked within that campaign circle.

Of course it holds water! McCain had copies of Romney's tax returns for ten years. He probably took one look at them and said to himself, I can't have this guy on the ticket with me! Maybe he squealed to Reid. Which begs the question, why did Romney think he could get away with running for President now? Probably because he thought he could bluff his way out of releasing his taxes by just complying with the very minimum amount of info with his 2010 and an "estimate" of 2011. Uhhh...taxes were due on 4/15/12, right? My taxes are paid already! WTF!?
I think the Republicans had better clear this up or they may have to find another last minute candidate to nominate. This is not good for Romney.

Once again - no one is accusing Romney of breaking any laws. Obviously he has intentionally dodged paying taxes, given that the one return he did provide shows that he paid only about 14% in taxes. But if he LEGALLY intentionally dodged paying taxes, that's not something he could be arrested for. We won't know until he releases his returns, but clearly there is SOMETHING in those returns he is desperate to keep a deep dark secret.
