Jeffrey Warren of Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, California, won the scholarship awarded by the Martin Luther King Senior Citizens Club. Warren applied for the "black only" scholarship, citing that the application only encouraged blacks to apply, but didn't have any racial requirement.

King High School Principal Darel Hansen said the organization's cover letter did state race was a factor, but that information had been left off the application and was not requested when he applied.

"It was kind of funny at first, everyone was laughing. They announced it for an African American, they saw me walk up," Warren said.A college-bound white student in Riverside has returned a $1,000 scholarship intended for black students.

How are we ever going to end racism when the folks in charge keep breaking us into races? I wonder if there are any "white only" scolarships out there? Somehow, that would come across as very racist...why doesn't this?

Mexican is not a race.

I feel like I'm on the stormfront.org.
Were whites enslaved and systematically discriminated against? Were they shot for being white? Hanged for being white? Were they denied education? The effects of white racism linger even today. An armed black person is twice as likely to be shot as an armed white person. Being white in America is an advantage.

It should be based on accomplishments, potential and need. I suppose if a Jewish foundation had requested a "Jewish only" scholarship, or a Catholic organization a "Catholic only" one, it should be honored likewise.

Sure, why not? If it is provided by a private group that has a target demographic they want to help I have absolutely no problem with it. Taxpayer supported scholarships are another situation entirely and MUST not be confused with private groups of like minded individuals. In this case, I think the group's application and acceptance process needs a little work.

There is NOTHING wrong with the scholarship application being made available through the taxpayer supported school. There is NOTHING wrong with that application being forwarded to the organization providing the scholarship, by a government school. As long as the government school has no input in awarding or denying the scholarship then what exactly is the issue? If they allow this scholarship application to be but no other ethnicity based applications, then of course, THAT is an issue. As presented in this story, one would have to have a very narrow mind to develop it into a problem.

Actually, yes I would. As long as the school offering it in their catalog of available scholarships is not refusing to offer other ethnicity based scholarships in that catalog. How about first nations only? The school is NOT AWARDING the scholarship. The school guidance programs are the most efficient way of letting students know what scholarships are available to them.
