Jeffrey Warren of Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, California, won the scholarship awarded by the Martin Luther King Senior Citizens Club. Warren applied for the "black only" scholarship, citing that the application only encouraged blacks to apply, but didn't have any racial requirement.

King High School Principal Darel Hansen said the organization's cover letter did state race was a factor, but that information had been left off the application and was not requested when he applied.

"It was kind of funny at first, everyone was laughing. They announced it for an African American, they saw me walk up," Warren said.A college-bound white student in Riverside has returned a $1,000 scholarship intended for black students.

How are we ever going to end racism when the folks in charge keep breaking us into races? I wonder if there are any "white only" scolarships out there? Somehow, that would come across as very racist...why doesn't this?

Scholarships should be awarded on a persons merit not color.

However, If the Scholarship is applied for economic reasons as exclusive to those of lower income families then YES a color based scholarship would be ok.

The MOMENT you offer exceptions they'll be taken advantage of.. ANd THEN you're right back to the original question..

Not necessarially. But I understand how you would think so.

Frankly, I commend the young man for returning the scholarship. He understood more about what had happened than most people here.

Oh,, To be SURE the guy should be commended.. ALREADY he's quite a contrast to that full grown woman in Mass..who tried to pass herself off as a Minority to reap the benefits and NOW finds herself having to explain her decietfulness..

It's discrimination, plain and simple. We need to go back to the merit system. Earn it through hard work, not skin color.

Noxious white privilege is still so deeply entrenched, and stubbornly immovable, in this country that things like this - for folks who aren't "blessed" by being born white - are still necessary. Just because folks have concluded that "racism doesn't exist anymore", doesn't mean it doesn't; it's just sneakier these days.

A scholarship can be anything the donor of the scholarship wants it to be. Like i keep being told -- It's a free country. If I wanted to give a scholarship to someone who was left handed, gay, and 6ft tall that would be my option. The college or university just has to let students know what's available. My daughter was at Michigan and she got a check in the mail for $100. It was a scholarship for young women who came from her high school and joined a certain sorority. No strings attached.

if there were to be a scholarship program only for white people, there would be hell to pay. This double standard is BS in my opinion. They raise a huge ruckus if somebody is turned down because of the color of skin (Black)... it should work both ways.

Democrazts have alrady DUMBED DOWN the High School Ed system in 1968 to makle grades better for the Black Child. The American Education System has collaPSED. Time is way past that we can make things easier on Black Children who would rather play than study. Racist????? No, just the Facts. If the Black CXhild cannot come up to SNUFF then there is a problem interacizlly. I do not believe that for a moment.

As much as I hate race-based scholarships, it's not the government's business to decide how people can spend their money. Not in this case anyway.

It should be based on the income of the parents. If they are poor and the children do well in their studies they deserve a scholarship. In my country we have the same thing, only that the majority race and not the minority gets most of the scholarship and some of them are from well to do families.

One should absolutely be able to place any sort of restrictions on money one wishes to give in the form of a scholarship. It is private money. If you don't qualify, tough noogies.

you think if there was a "white only" scholarship... people wouldn't go ballistic?

edit: someone did create a "white only" scholarship... and it created a lot of controversy. Double standards are so wrong.

I'm sure they would, but banning that scholarship would equally be as wrong as banning this one would be.

GOOD 'cause I do too.. In FACT.. I don't have ANY problem with Color based Scholarships as long as it goes BOTH ways.. I don't want to hear any grief when some ALL white club issues scholarships to ONLY whites recipients..

Like I said.. WHat's good for ONE is good for all or it's not good AT all..
