Jeffrey Warren of Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, California, won the scholarship awarded by the Martin Luther King Senior Citizens Club. Warren applied for the "black only" scholarship, citing that the application only encouraged blacks to apply, but didn't have any racial requirement.

King High School Principal Darel Hansen said the organization's cover letter did state race was a factor, but that information had been left off the application and was not requested when he applied.

"It was kind of funny at first, everyone was laughing. They announced it for an African American, they saw me walk up," Warren said.A college-bound white student in Riverside has returned a $1,000 scholarship intended for black students.

How are we ever going to end racism when the folks in charge keep breaking us into races? I wonder if there are any "white only" scolarships out there? Somehow, that would come across as very racist...why doesn't this?

No, I don't think so, merit should be prime consideration. Private scholarships should have some limitations.

Socio-economic status based scholarships are appropriate.

Absolutely not - I thought they had disappeared

Aren't the liberals continuously complaining about fairness - is this fairness or racist

Scholarships should be awarded by competition for the highest achievers not the color of their skin.

Targeting one particular Race is nothing more than Racism, if white people had scholarships dedicated to white's only, every minority would be screaming bloody Murder

i understand as a lib you need to ignore the comments i have posted and will do all you can do stick your head up sharpton's ass. that is what divides the country. if a gorup wants to give a scvholarship to a white student who plays a flute so be it. if they wish to give it to a black gay baseball player so be it. if the group wants to give a scholarship to a irish girl who dances so be it. it is their money and can give it to who ever they wish. so please stop trying to divide the country and allow us to live our lives as we wish.

and yet you post like a lib. strange how so many on this site call themselves conservative but sound like the libs. so tell me libby why do you think a group giving the scholarship can not pick who gets the money.

Affirmative action served a purpose to give blacks disadvantaged by poor schools a chance to pursue higher education, but it also reinforced the notion that color makes people different in some significant way. All mention of race needs to be eliminated.

I think it is wrong to give a scholarship based on skin color. They should be given to whomever has worked hard for them and or those who are in need, regardless of their skin color.

It's a good thing that boy returned it. He clearly didn't deserve (He received three scholarships). And Research even shows 75 percent of college scholarships go to non-Hispanic white students even though such students are only 62 percent of the overall student population. http://www.finaid.org/scholar... (That's one of the reason why we need to keep minority scholarships).

It is not just race and it’s not just scholarships. high school seniors like that boy come from high socioeconomic status families tend to already be better-prepared for college than kids from low-socioeconomic status families, that means that financial aid resources naturally flow to the high-socioeconomic status students.

Across the board, the way higher education works in America is to deliver the most resources to the people who need the least help. And the students who tend to be the most needy of scholarships are the minority. I don't know how make this any simpler.

works america deliver resources people students needy scholarships minority simpler

"I wonder how you feel about that rapper who has 600 million dollars in the bank and his son received a scholarship to attend college. He isn't giving it back."

how bright and sharp as a knife are you!!! you just proved my point. you should have kept your mouths shut, letting your mouth run off without thinking. It wasn't about his race that he received the scholarship. It was because the Institution that awarded the "merit scholarship " to him didn't factor in his his financial need when they should have.
    thanks, genius.

It would be better if you had a graph that included RACE-BASED grants as opposed to merit-based grants.

We cant end racism by setting up things that highlight race as a requirement.
