White House Watermelon Lawn: Is this racist?

The mayor from a small city in Orange County, Los Alamitos, sent out an email that shows a picture of the White House lawn covered in watermelons. The title of the email was "No Easter egg hunt his year" from Mayor Dean Grose. Of course, Grose said that is was not supposed to offend anybody, especially African-Americans. Grose has since sent an apology email and left a voice mail. It was supposed to be a funny picture, with watermelons growing from the White House lawn.. that was it.

Answered: Yes! The picture of the White House watermelon lawn is racist!
Since the picture has nothing to do with Easter, I think the only reasonable conclusion that can be drawn is that watermelons were used to stereotype the President because of his race. Even if that was not the intent it should have been obvious to this Mayor how it would be perceived.

I'm still try trying to figure this one out... It says no more Easter Egg hunt this year, and shows a picture of a watermelon garden.

It seems as though something from the email was left out. The title and the picture make no sense what so ever.

It may be racist, but also ignorant. There are so many people that eat watermelon. Normally, I give people the benefit of a doubt when considering racial messages. For instance, I didn't see that controversial chimp cartoon as racist since my first reaction was that it was a joke on how they thought the stimulus bill looked like a monkey wrote it. A common, if not very funny joke. However, this... I really can't see any other interpretation. If it were even funny, I could forgive the racism, but it's a really dumb joke, to boot.
