White House Czar Calls for End to 'War on Drugs'

- The Obama administration's new drug czar says he wants to banish the idea that the U.S. is fighting "a war on drugs," a move that would underscore a shift favoring treatment over incarceration in trying to reduce illicit drug use.

In his first interview since being confirmed to head the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Gil Kerlikowske said Wednesday the bellicose analogy was a barrier to dealing with the nation's drug issues.

"Regardless of how you try to explain to people it's a 'war on drugs' or a 'war on a product,' people see a war as a war on them," he said. "We're not at war with people in this country."... Read full article »

Kerilikowske is a smart man. Paying more attention to the problem rather than the solution only makes the problem bigger.

Lizard; Not to mention that illegality is sending millions and millions of American dollars to Latin drug lords tax free. This finances their private armies, their operations, and their payoff operations. Just the legalization of pot would generate money here in the US, cut down the amount being paid to Latin drug lords, and free dozens and dozens of DEA officers to focus more on the chemical narcotics that are a true danger to American society.

Yeah, that's pretty much is how I feel. You might lump hashish in there as well. But bear in mind, I would choose rehab over incarceration for users. But for kingpins of cartels and major importers and domestic distributors of chemical narcotics, man, I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy! And I'm not really sorry.

I really don't think that "treating" the drug problem is going to solve anything. Find em, jail em, or make it legal.

Only for about the last 20 or 25 years or so. I'm trying to remember how long ago it was that Bill Bennet was Drug Czar. I believe it was during the Reagan administration, but I'm not sure. I just can't remember who the very first Drug Czar was, but if Bennet was not the first then he was probably the second.
