White House Czar Calls for End to 'War on Drugs'

- The Obama administration's new drug czar says he wants to banish the idea that the U.S. is fighting "a war on drugs," a move that would underscore a shift favoring treatment over incarceration in trying to reduce illicit drug use.

In his first interview since being confirmed to head the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Gil Kerlikowske said Wednesday the bellicose analogy was a barrier to dealing with the nation's drug issues.

"Regardless of how you try to explain to people it's a 'war on drugs' or a 'war on a product,' people see a war as a war on them," he said. "We're not at war with people in this country."... Read full article »

Kerilikowske is a smart man. Paying more attention to the problem rather than the solution only makes the problem bigger.

He said it wrong, it is a war on some drugs. Alcohol, Nicotine, Caffine ect. not included in the "war".

Gil Kerlikowske was a hard working officer with drug issues in Seattle. I'm convinced he will continue this on-going war and do it well.

    What is this CZAR crap?

He has part of a good idea but he has to attack the problem and define a solution at the same time. IF the government would only look at things the way a business does, it may make sense. When they start out calling the man in charge a CZAR - it is over befoire it starts and I don't care if the RIGHT or the left doing it. It is the same thing!

Lizard; Do you remember when Bill Bennet was the Drug Czar? I'm thinking it was during the Reagan administration, but I'm not sure. I believe he was the first, but he may have been the second Czar.

Biden is a twit! What they need to do is get serious about drugs in this country. The problem is real, I see it every day and I see how the courts and society tend to ignore it.

On the contrary! I would be in favor of more fines and less jail time for users or those we picked up for small amount possession and MUCH heavier sentences for the pushers, impoortares and manufacturers. This would also free up some cells for the influx of the heavies!
