While in government, you discover the President is committing extortion and other serious crimes. By exposing the situation you might bring about the Presidents downfall, but your career would be destroyed because you would be framed, fired, and publicly humiliated on other matters. Knowing you would be vindicated five years later, would you blow the whistle? What if you knew you would never be vindicated?

Yes is my gut answer, and I will stick with it. I usually write my response before I read the other responses, and for some reason, on this one I went the other way. Matt brings up a good point. There can be situations where doing the right thing is indeed the wrong thing to do. Sometimes there just isn't a good solution. If something is causing 100 deaths a month and revealing what you know will raise that to 1000, you have to decide whether or not the right thing is right.

Fired, Publicly Humiliated, would be okay, but it is the clamshell extract and Dimethyl sulphate oxide that I would be most concerned with... So, I would have to figure out how to do it anonymously or I could end up as a small pay check for an OGA contractor. Bill Clinton had a reference sheet of a few hundred, G.Dubya and the Heartless one had sheets with several thousand. I would not be surprised if this was not the same circumstance for President Obama. Soldiers are killed, and the clandestine destroyed for mission or nuanced position, this was just part of the position. But... what if you exposed the issue and nobody cared?

It's all about morals, if someone was breaking the law would you tell on them? Yes or no? What if you knew you would never be vindicated? That is a secondary question that is to be answered in a person's comment. I believe anyone breaking the law in a seat of power should be held for their actions without a doubt, no matter whether you are a small level politician or a president or in between...

Easy to say it's all about morals.

But what if ratting out the hypothetical president resulted in the death of US troops? What if ratting out the hypothetical president resulted in the collapse of the economy, including not just a loss of money, but of real human suffering?

I am not saying, "it's all relative" because I basically agree with you, but the reality is that the world can be very complex.

Yes the world is complex, but no matter the outcome I believe it's better NOT to be morally corrupt. Don't you think that if the president is involved in something like committing extortion and other serious crimes he has already put all these things in jeopardy... Have you not noticed that our economy is already collapsing all around us and have you not noticed that every day we have thousands of troops that are in danger. So I doubt that someone standing up for what's right would really have the effect your saying it could possibly have... it's already happening in front of our eyes everyday. Oh not to mention I see suffering of people everyday when I walk out of my front door. If our "hypothetical" president was involved in extortion, then he deserves to rot in prison like the criminal he/she is... That's all I have to say!

if we had a honest news media reporting all the violations of our public officials, and honest judges holding up to the constitution, this country would not be where we are today. Blowing the whistle is not the problem, its taking the correct act for the violations.

Although I expected to see Obama's face in this thread's photo.

Accepting "anonymous" $Millions from Mideast nations is not legal. Obama promised to give full disclosure of his record breaking campaign funds following his election. He has never allowed these figures to see the light of day. When asked about funds from illegal sources many of Obama's team have simply stated "the accounting books are already closed".

funds illegal sources obamas team simply accounting books closed
