You should really be asking which geniuses decided it was a good idea to repeal stuff like the Glass-Steagall Act which protected our economy from collapse via corporate greed among banking institutions. Thanks, Phil Gramm, we couldn't have enjoyed the current state of chaos without ya!!!

As is usually the case in claims such as this, it has to do with Washington doublespeak and political smoke and mirrors.

Understanding what happened requires understanding two concepts of what makes up the national debt. The national debt is made up of public debt and intergovernmental holdings. The public debt is debt held by the public, normally including things such as treasury bills, savings bonds, and other instruments the public can purchase from the government. The public debt went down in each of those four years, the intergovernmental holdings went up each year by a far greater amount--and, in turn, the total national debt (which is public debt intergovernmental holdings) went up. Therein lies the lie.

Both parties are to blame, but the Democrats, who have controled the U. S. Congress for longer periods than the Republicans, take the cake.
Over the years, "Pork Projects" and re-election to contine feeding at the public trough have been a Congresional Hallmark. The taxpaying public be damned.
As Pres. Teddy Roosevelt once said, "Its time to throw the bums out".

If I had put every dime I have put into Social security into a money market fund, I would be able to retire and live very nicely.

I read someplace just a few days ago that the gov't took way over $82 Billion and basically put IOU's into the fund.
Wouldn't it be nice if instead of bailing out everything else that they paid that back plus the rate of interest in effect at the time of each raid.
