Religion is my choice, government is not. I want to build a house on a building lot that I have but the country will make me pay $20,000 before I can even turn the first shovel full of dirt. God only asks for 10% and the government asks for much more. God gave me free will and government takes it away.

I was born after the 80's, so religion has had plenty of time to become largely inseparable from the government.
So while I don't appreciate being on CCTV, watch lists, the degradation of my civil rights, red tape gates, or any of the other inept and Orwellian crap gov't can throw my way, I'd be lying if I said religion was any better.
Without religion, there would be one less tool to unify people in support of these measures, one less reason justifying them, and more intellectual development overall.

As an atheist and a female, I don't trust religion. As a libertarian, I don't trust the government. Both just get in my way.

The only times in history religion is able to oppress is when the wall of separation between church and state is not present.

And GOVERNMENT tries to hide behind religion to justify what they do..I don't think that is the intended use for religion!

Government can penalize/jail me if I don't follow their 'laws' and, as we've seen, has the ability to force it's agenda on me. Religion can't - I can walk away from it.

Twelve years of christian education seriously oppressed my personal life; AND the evangelical movement has seriously and dangerously interfered with the very ethics and morality of my country.

Definitely government. I'm not a fan of organized religion - or religion at all really. Having said that - religion never kicked my door down, put me *in chains and a cell unjustly. At least... not yet. lol But religion is its own form of bondage, I can certainly grant that.

Not that the other one isn't responsible for some of my early childhood distress. The fear of going to hell because I didn't know God, the existential despair from realizing he wasn't real, and being surrounded by people who I knew would alienate me if I ever came out as an atheist. But at least most of that is in the past.

The U.S. Government, on the other hand, is still pretty corrupt. Inflation is a huge pain to deal with, especially as a wage worker who is trying to save up for his own home. I might have to get a second job just to keep up.

New laws and regulations being developed every single day from the Federal, State, and local government levels, the public may not see it yet, but one day when they enact a law that infringes on your rights, you'll see it clearly! Most religions only provide a set of guidelines for you to live your life by, and have had the same ones for very long times! A religion can be opted out of, but the government won't allow that option! Big difference!

No doubt about it. Simply put, religion may be silly at times, but, it doesn't establish moronic laws and policies like the government does. However, they both try their best to keep us under there respective thumbs.

Government IS the oppressor of the People.
Religion doesn't have the power(thank God!) to oppress Americans.
Other countries, muslim countries, are oppressed by their religion.

I get along with people from all walks of life, all creeds, and all colors. Individuals are beautiful. It's collectives (and especially collectives with the coercive power of the state) who make me feel uncomfortable.
