It will be the one you practice with the most. It will be the one you can shoot between the eyes of the culprit if you come home to a hostage situation. If you can't do this with a handgun might I suggest a Bull pup assault rifle or even a lever action rifle in 357 an 44 magnum.Hostages are generally tortured before being murdered anyway. So I have just so many inches of the butt wipes body to connect with.I have instructed family that I will count to 3 out loud while I aim. They are to simply drop to the floor.I pull the trigger. So again the gun you shoot the best. :)'s

The one that fits your hand and can be easily used when you are in a sleep deprived, it's dark and does not fall apart.

It's the one that fits your hand and feels comfortable for you to fire. I have Taurus PT 99, .9 mil. in stainless steel. It took trying about a dozen different weapons, before I found one that really felt comfortable, and that was easiest to control. My daughter prefers a .22, and my husband, well, he has his arsenal! I hear people arguing about this gun or another, but if the gun doesn't feel good in the shooters hand, they will never fire it as well, as one that does.

I prefer the 500 Smith & Wesson. Nobody will argue with it if you pull back the hammer. However, I still think a shotgfun works best.

The one you shot the best. I am looking into a Taurus made The Judge. It shoots .45LC and .410 GA shotgun shells in a 5 shot revolver. I fige a .410 then a .45 and if they still some do it over again. But I do carry and keep on my nightstand a Sig P229 .45

The judge was featured in the movie "Max Payne" as a door opener. It is a sweet piece of hardware if a little short on rounds. Hit what you shoot at and that max payne door opener sweet piece hardware rounds hit shoot max payne door opener sweet piece hardware rounds hit shoot max payne door opener sweet piece hardware rounds hit shoot won't matter.

Unless you hit someone in the head or heart, you are going to just pisst them off... home defense is at least a 9m per my range master.

I would need someone to advise me on this, I have never owned or shot a handgun. I have looked at some and the problem I have is that I'm not very strong-like to pull the thing on top back. (you can laugh at me, I don't even know the correct terminology!!!)

Nobody is laughing. Try a 38 snub nose. That should do the trick. easy to handle, very little kick back and it gets the job done at short distance.

called racking the slide to chamber a round. My girlfriend has the same problem with some semiautos. Coch the hammer first and it is easier

Thanks for the info. Since I posted my comment I have actually gone to the shooting range with my son and shot a 25 handgun-way to little and kicks up alot. I also shot his 22 rifle. I really like that better.
And thank you Chef for not laughing at me. I had the guys at the shooting range cracking up-there was a guy there with 2 huge, Dirty Harry type guns and even though we wore ear protection I still jumped every time he shot it!

.22 are fun nd we have 2 pistold for plinking but They are not that effective for home defense. My GF shots a 9MM Sig and my Sig P220 .45. Think about atautus The Judge revolver. It cab shout 410 GA shotgun shells

Sue don't let them put you off. Most shooters are very friendly and will gladly share their knowledge with a beginner. We all started sometime. I find the men don't always take me seriously either, until they see me shoot. When they realize I know what I'm doing, they give me my propers. I would suggest you go to a gun show, or dealer, that has many weapons you can hold and get a grip on. When you find one that feels good, try an indoor range that rents weapons, and try them out. It's a big investment, so you want a gun that is going to work for you when you need it. I use a .9 mil. You can get a .22 handgun, too. A .40 cal. Smith and Wesson doesn't have much more kick than a 9 mil, but it has good stopping power. Good luck with your search.
