Where's the Outrage?
By CHARLES M. BLOW
July 27, 2012

Are too many Democratic voters sleepwalking away from our democracy this election cycle, not nearly outraged enough about Big Money's undue influence and Republican state legislatures changing the voting rules?

It seems so.

A Gallup poll released this week found that: "Democrats are significantly less likely now (39 percent) than they were in the summers of 2004 and 2008 to say they are ‘more enthusiastic about voting than usual' in the coming presidential election." Republicans are more enthusiastic than they were before the last election.

Some of that may be the effect of having a Democratic president in office; it's sometimes easier to marshal anger against an incumbent than excitement for him. Whatever the reason, this lack of enthusiasm at this critical juncture in the election is disturbing for Democrats.

First, there's the specter of the oligarchy lingering over this election, which disproportionately benefits Republicans. According to a report by Senator Bernard Sanders of Vermont, "So far this year, 26 billionaires have donated more than $61 million to super PACs, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. And that's only what has been publicly disclosed." That didn't include "about $100 million that Sheldon Adelson has said that he is willing to spend to defeat President Obama; or the $400 million that the Koch brothers have pledged to spend during the 2012 election season."

During a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing on Tuesday, Sanders put it this way: "What the Supreme Court did in Citizens United is to say to these same billionaires and the corporations they control: ‘You own and control the economy; you own Wall Street; you own the coal companies; you own the oil companies. Now, for a very small percentage of your wealth, we're going to give you the opportunity to own the United States government.' "

Then, of course, there's the widespread voter suppression mostly enacted by Republican-led legislatures.

According to the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, at least 180 restrictive voting bills were introduced since the beginning of 2011 in 41 states, and "16 states have passed restrictive voting laws that have the potential to impact the 2012 election" because they "account for 214 electoral votes, or nearly 79 percent of the total needed to win the presidency."

A provision most likely to disenfranchise voters is a requirement that people show photo identification to vote. Millions of Americans don't have these forms of ID, and many can't easily obtain them, even when states say they'll offer them free, because getting the documentation to obtain the "free" ID takes time and money.

Make no mistake about it, these requirements are not about the integrity of the vote but rather the disenfranchisement of voters. This is about tilting the table so that more of the marbles roll to the Republican corner.

Look at it this way: We have been moving toward wider voter participation for a century. States began to issue driver's licenses more than a century ago and began to include photos on those licenses decades ago. Yet, as the Brennan Center points out, "prior to the 2006 election, no state required its voters to show government-issued photo ID at the polls (or elsewhere) in order to vote."

Furthermore, most voter laws have emerged in the last two years. What is the difference between previous decades and today? The election of Barack Obama. It is no coincidence that some of the people least likely to have proper IDs to vote are the ones that generally vote Democratic and were strong supporters of Obama last election: young people, the poor and minorities.

If Democrats don't wake up soon, this election might not just be won or lost, it could be bought or stolen.

If it is bought and stolen, it will be the end of our form of government within two years, and the beginning of the Three Headed Hydra of Fascism in the US>

Wish there was someway to get this post out to every Progressive in the country so they could see in black and white what we will be facing and what we will lose.. I do have some friends that are so upset that two of them have already changed to independent.. They hate Romney but blame the President for not keeping his promises.
Hard to make them understand that the party of NO made a promise not to allow anything proposed by the President to pass !
I have been talking to anyone that will listen about the President for about 7 months everywhere I go.It is very simple. I just go up to any stranger, ask if they voted last time for Pres,, will they vote in November and then will they vote for Obama. I do this every where I go and this food shopping, dry cleaners, Mall, standing outside Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart and Perkins. Oh yes any diner or place I may go for dinner. It has been very rewarding and I have gotten some folks to volunteer for the campaign and some to work the polls in Nov.. It is easy and I would just hope that more would get off their buts and just do it. If I can do it then anyone can do it as I can't walk that well as I have MS. I refuse to let the repukes win this one as it means too much for too many people. If you or anyone can think of something else I can do just email me at Progressivebluestate@yahoo.com

There better be plenty of outrage by Democrats and asap before the GOP turns federal and states government into a corporate dictatorship, and the country into a banana republic.

I am sending money to progressive candidates (at least what I can afford to send) and I encourage friends and family to do the same. Democracy in America is almost gone but I will be able to say I tried and that is all one can do. It seems that America goes in circles sometimes. They will become so very right wing until they go over the top somewhere and then suddenly everyone will deny every thinking like that. Racism is still around but it is no longer acceptable to display it and that has made a difference. Other biases will die the same slow death. The trouble it is take generation. Abbie Hoffman once was asked how they expected to change the world. His reply was that is was so slow and they only way to speed things up he supposed was for everyone to go home and kill their parents. The press had a field day with that one. ABBIE HOFFMAN ADVOCATES KILLING PARENTS. Of course he was talking about the slow pace at which society gradually comes to changing.

Instead of giving billions to big companies so they can waste it, the stimulus should have been for regular people. We could have given tens of thousands of Americans small business loans of $10,000, but instead we gave out billions to bigger companies. weed is still illegal, gays still can't get married, ows people got pepper sprayed, the patriot act is still here. Fk u Obama. I'll still vote for you over Romney but you're nothing to get excited about, and you send me five emails a day wanting me to give you money to blow on more high dollar campaign ads. Democrat party, you suck!

I feel your pain but like you I will vote for Obama. I like the man on a personal basis and have been around long enough to know that no President can do all that he promises and even what does get done is watered down. Americans are overly patriotic and quite a violent people despite their claim to being very into religion. The fanatic types are like those who were run out of European countries for being over the top with their religious activity. Too much "Hell and Damnation" from these people. Saving the auto companies really did trickle down. Can you imagine the chaos with no American owned care industry and all those skilled workers waiting around until some foreign entity came to their rescue? I agree with you. What we want we want now but unfortunately with the kind of political system America has it will not happen. It took years to get women the right to vote. We move forward an inch at a time and keep agitating for change.

Obama is not even trying to keep his promises though.

He could easily have followed through on ending the wars, not starting new wars, putting the bill on the internet 5 days before signing it, adding transparency, and not doing signing statements.

Of course he can't do everything he promised because of congress, but he is not even trying to follow through on things he can change.

Nothing wrong with showing a picture ID... unless it stops voter fraud.
That could cause a problem for the Democrats.
