When is it correct to call someone evil?

Tasine 2011/03/13 13:22:39
I read an article this morning that set me thinking. I was reading an article that spoke of the evil of President Obama. I don't use the word "evil" very often - I'm not particularly comfortable with that word for some reason. I know evil exists. I think I recognize evil when I see it, yet I seldom use the word evil. I suspect that I see the word as something beyond this world and maybe feel just a little awkward in using the word.

So my question is this: under what circumstances should the word "evil" be used when speaking of living humans beings? And is evil worse than terrible or bad or disgusting or reprehensible? Is evil more a mental thing or a physical thing? When does one slip over from being terrible to being evil? Does evil denote a religious thing? Can a person be both good and evil?
You!

Politicians become evil when they serve money and power above God or their constituency. In other words, about 99.9% of every politician above the level of dog catcher. Some of them too !

When you see the politicians collude with the public sector workers to pillage and rape the taxpayers they represent...during the last 40 years the public sector has been over compensated and created their multi-million dollar retirement packages all on the backs of taxpayers ...where today the public sector operation is $6.7 Trillion and the federal retirees less then 1 million cost the taxpayers over $200 Billion annually...wonder why the deficit and debt conscious politicians aren't talking about real reform and operation adjustments because we can save $2 Trillion annually right now and an additional $3 Trillion in the fraudulent pension reform even at the federal level we can save over $200 Billion today...by putting a cap on the extravagant pensions and putting all those under 35 into Social Security, Medicare and self-directed 401Ks like the taxpayers...

One thing is sure for me. Collusion between unions and elected officials OR collusion between corporations and elected officials is reprehensible and as far as I am concerned proves malfeasance of office on the part of the politician. It is the taxpayers who are being defrauded and if it isn't a crime, it should be.

Evil connotes a level of disregard for others which goes beyond terrible or awful. However, there is a difference between using a word to describe a person or an action. To say that someone's actions are evil suggests that there may be something about the person worthy of redemption. To say that someone is evil suggests that that person is beyond redemption.

Can a person be both good and evil? Oh yes; A person can be good to his family and friends and be really evil to everyone else. I would say a person that is trying to take anyone's Liberty and/or Freedom away is truly EVIL. Anyone come to mind?

It's correct to call someone evil when they perform evil deeds, which are deeds done with the intent to do harm. The term is used too loosely, e.g. Obama is not evil just because he does something you don't like.

Atrocities against humankind have been committed by evil people. For anyone to claim a person they don't agree with philosophically, politically or idealogically is therefore evil is ignorant, biased and arrogant. Differences in opinions do not rise to the level of evil.

Good point. I didn't mean to say that. But "being evil" is subjective, isn't it? What I see as evil you may not and vice versa.

I think that when someone uses someone else to get some sort of satisfaction against their will that that's pretty evil. I agree with you, though. I think the word is often used carelessly and in hyperbole.

Would it be justified to call George Soros an evil man! I think so as he call his days as a Nazi collaborator some of the happiest days of his life! He also says he has always seen himself as possessing attributes of diety! Since Barack Obama and he see eye to eye on almost everything, and the President is endorsing legislation that is stealing our individual rights and promotes outrageous spending that is placing our national soveriegnty in jeopardy, I would say he is evil!

Soros is one I have referred to as evil because everything I know about him points to that. Obama? I think he does evil things but don't yet have a handle on whether or not he understands the terrible and drastic consequences his actions will have. I am leaning toward thinking he knows full well the damage he is doing. I'm yet undecided as to whether or not HE is evil.

Evil is a person who acts in malicious ways to hurt other people with that intention in mind. It is acting in vile and disgusting ways to corrupt people, and they find humor in doing so. .

    Hi, Irish!
Great answer! But I don't understand "PTB" - haven't seen it before. Sociopaths don't even know when an apology is appropriate. Almost all their emotional responses are merely copied from others in an effort to appear normal.

sociopaths don't care. they use copied emotions to further fool people. world leaders are all sociopaths when you study them. true evil emanates from them. they have no feelings or emotions toward any one or anything. to me that is pure evil. to be able to totally be apart from the harm that is caused another. as if humans and other living creatures are merely bugs to study. they have no connections to the rest of humanity. nothing matters to them, they do not care .

well i think its in the job description if they want to rise to the top. how is it not evil?? they do only what benefits themselves or the ones they really work for. to be evil i think you have to be totally narcissistic . nothing matters but what you want. and what benefits them.
