What's More Important: Freedom or Safety?

With the latest shooting tragedy in Colorado, gun control is undoubtedly on everyone's mind. I know it's not as black and white as "freedom vs. safety" but people in the "pro-gun" camp seem to cite freedom, liberty and the 2nd amendment while talking about their right to carry guns. And as for the "anti-gun" camp, many cite the safety and well-being of the general public, as criminals and people with mental disorders will not have such easy access to weapons that kill. What do you think is more important: freedom or safety?

Guns = freedom AND safety. Imagine if everyone in the theater had had a concealed weapon during the shooting.

A nonsensical question. Freedom to own weapons was important enough to be included in the Constitution. Ownership of, and the capability to safely use, guns establishes two types of safety. 1. Protection of self, family and property from the morons of society. 2. Protection from Government coercion. Why do many in government want to take away your guns? To have MORE control over you. Believe it, or, if not, ask the citizens of many countries around the world. You'll believe it then.

Oddly enough there is a Marxist Training Manuel which states in Pictogram form If a person is the resident of a house remove his fire Arms and Execute him immediately.

and some of the Marx disciples ensured they had control of the guns in places like Poland. Bet the Poles wish they hadn't given up their right to own guns when they saw their own sons pointing bayonets in their direction. Giving up your guns and depending on government for one's safety is ludicrous. Especially since that very same government might be who you need protection from. Never give up your guns, never!

I see your point and agree on some parts but over all disagree there are other ways of defending one self that you can't use to go on a killing spree should you snap such as pepper spray or a tazer (non lethal voltage anyway)

pretty hard to deal with someone shooting at you or your family from more than 30' with your only defense 50,000 volts that has a range of less than 3' (arms length) or a spray version of a condiment.

you think that it will be a constant shoot out at the OK corral? I'd rather be able to defend myself vs. watching my daughter be molested by men with badges.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither safety nor liberty.

too bad you chicken out I disagree with your opinion. Obviously you have never been in a life or death situation like I have. I shot and killed someone that broke into my grandmothers house while I was taking care of her. I wasn't about to sit and wait around for the police.

Actually I have but I didn;t have a gun I saved myself by busting the guys knee caps with a bat I was 14 and I was coming home from the park at night and the guy tried to get me into his car. We all know I wouldnt be likely to come back from that alive. I'm not saying murder in self defense is wrong Im sayin ownership of a gun is more often than not done with malicious intent. If you disagree fine but neither of our oppinions on the matter will change anything and I have other matters to attend to than this fruitless debate

Oops, I didn't mean to rave you. Oh well.

We already regulate who gets guns. but you can't regulate criminals. Criminals don't register their guns, buy them legally and so on.

nah I'm far from Liberal if I was a liberal I would say Destroy all guns ( I realize there neccesary in some cases), Guns Kill (No people with guns kill), you get the point. I'm just stating I used to live in a bad neighborhood and I knew people who got guns easily all the time you just have to know who to talk to, like anything else

Yeah, but did they get them through legitimate gun dealers or was it buying them on the street? Statistics show the vast majority of guns used in crime where acquired through illegal means. I agree on a crack down of illegal gun purchases and transfers, and dealers that are back-door dealing guns illegally.

With freedom, you can enforce safety.

For those choosing safety, how is that government net working along the Arizona border where our JUSTICE DEPARTMENT is ignoring the laws being broken and the lived changed and lost. You have a chance to do something positive about it in November. You only have to have courage to do it at the ballot box now rather than at the box that holds your child later. Which box would you be happiest with?

People have been killing other people long before guns were invented. It is not the weapon of choice but the mindset behind the behavior. We have a lot of messed up people. Let's look for what is causing that. I believe it is spiritual depravity and that lax attitude toward life and others. It is really hard to understand why people do these evil things. It is like a sickness. So many movies like "Cliff Hanger" glorify senseless killing and make it seem like it is nothing and I think that affects certain personality types. We need to clean up our movies and video games that kids are exposed to and become numb to what they portray.

You wish to impose your views on what's allowed in movies and video games to help prevent the less than a 10th of 1 percent of the citizenry out there from shooting someone? Please. That hype is too old to even bring up again. The idiots of the world don't need movies or games to want to kill. What we need is a room down at every cop shop where the killers get to spend an unsupervised hour or so with the relatives of those they shoot down.

Freedom IS safety. Even in this one example. If people had been free to carry guns in that theater, the nut job probably would have thought twice about his murderous plan. Even if he had gone ahead with it, knowing that someone in the theater might be armed, the odds are that he would have been shot long before he could have shot nearly as many people. There is no downside to people being armed in a movie theater because no sane person is going to start a gunfight in a crowded theater.

I will say Freedom AND Safety! This has everything to do with the 2nd amendment and that gives us the right to bear arms! I'm sure that having gun control will not keep criminals from getting ahold of guns to use against innocent people - it would just make it easier to use them against innocent by-standers that can't defend themselves! Crazy people will do things no matter what you do to try to stop them. How about all the people that are killed in cars every year? Do you take cars away from the public to prevent that from happening? It is a lot more likely that you will be killed by a car then a gun and that is a fact.
