What's More Important: Freedom or Safety?

With the latest shooting tragedy in Colorado, gun control is undoubtedly on everyone's mind. I know it's not as black and white as "freedom vs. safety" but people in the "pro-gun" camp seem to cite freedom, liberty and the 2nd amendment while talking about their right to carry guns. And as for the "anti-gun" camp, many cite the safety and well-being of the general public, as criminals and people with mental disorders will not have such easy access to weapons that kill. What do you think is more important: freedom or safety?

    That's not actually true, any more than the inverse. Solitary confinement is safe, but not very liberating. The point is that when a person is free, he is responsible for his own safety.

    Ben Franklin was a Founding father. Quite intelligent. And HE stated the obvious in that ANYONE willing to allow the FED to take over their daily safety do not deserve freedom.

    It is absolutely true. It's the premise behind the 2nd amendment. Your absolutes are from one extreme to the other. The balance between police protection and personal protection was in balance prior to the gun lobby and their frothing to take away our freedom.

    So even with everything a slave does not have to worry about providing for his own self,he is still not safe?
    Even if all his needs are met by his master,he still has no power over his own life and no security about his safety?
    He still might want or need to get more or do better,why ? because he is supposed to be a free human?
