What's More Important: Freedom or Safety?

With the latest shooting tragedy in Colorado, gun control is undoubtedly on everyone's mind. I know it's not as black and white as "freedom vs. safety" but people in the "pro-gun" camp seem to cite freedom, liberty and the 2nd amendment while talking about their right to carry guns. And as for the "anti-gun" camp, many cite the safety and well-being of the general public, as criminals and people with mental disorders will not have such easy access to weapons that kill. What do you think is more important: freedom or safety?

Without freedom, and with infringement on our constitutional rights, there can be no safety. We have people practicing their 1st amendment right yet they protest the 2nd. How does that many any logical sense?! We are already in a police state that has been trained by the military. Surely our laptops or iPhones won't protect us.

The freedom to have a firearm allows me to protect myself, e.g. safety, when there are no police around. I'd rather be alive, explaining why I had to shoot someone, than dead.

Criminals will always find a way to buy/steal firearms. Banning guns will only take them out of the hands of law abiding citizens.

According to a United States Department of Justice report:
38% of assaults & 60% of rapes occur during home invasions.
1 of every 5 homes will experience a breakin
or home invasion. That's over 2,000,000 homes!
According to Statistics Canada, there has been an average of
289,200 home invasions annually over the last 5 years.
Statistically, there are over 8,000 home invasions per day in North America
According to Statistics U.S.A., there was an average of 3,600,000
home invasions annually between 1994 and 2000.

Here is an example of 8 home invasions and crimes stopped because of our "Right to Bear Arms", search the net and you will find many many more.

We teach our children that cars are a lethal weapon when they get ready to drive and I would bet that most gun owners teach their children the dangers of guns (just as we did) at an age when they can understand the danger.

I live in Colorado and even though the massacre was a tragedy it was not caused by lack of gun control...It happened because this man decided to commit an evil crime.

I for one will fight for our rights till my last breath (and no I am not going to take up my guns to do it) I will talk to everyone I come in contact with and voice my opinions (1st ammendment right) to anyone and everyone through print, conversation and emails
because I believe our ancestors who fought for our rights, whether in the revolutionary war, the civil war, world war I and world war II would want it that way.

And because of my right to bear arms we will be able to protect our home and family.

How will you do it if you enact gun control?

Take it from one of the founders----

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.----Ben Franklin

.....So isn't our freedom what really makes us safe?

If there was a person who carried concealed in that theater lives could've been saved... if many of the people would've been carrying lives definitely would've been saved.

You cant fix STUPID or CRAZY---but you can PROTECT YOURSELF FROM IT.

Those that chose "freedom" over "safety" only proved to the world that Americans are as backwards as they come! By supporting the rights of these mass-shooters to purchase and arm themselves with assault weapons and large capacity clips, you are supporting the continuation of and encouraging others to go on mass-shooting sprees. This just goes to show how very sick many RWNJ American minds are!

BTW: When the founding fathers gave us the right to carry guns, it was when there were no guns, only muskets! I have great faith that the founding fathers did not intend for common citizens to carry around assault rifles that carry 100-round clips, 30-round clips, or even 6-shooters.

It has nothing to do with these shooters and other crazy people---- it has to do with a persons right to protect themselve FROM crazy people like him...

dont you get it??? or do you really think that the government and police can protect you? If they were so good nobody would die at the hands of anyone.

Only YOU can protect YOURSELF---if you dont get that you live in a fantasyland.

No one should have the right to be able to arm themselves like this..., NO ONE!!! The USA is the only country in the civilized world where their gun laws are so lax that ordinary citizens can legally get their hands on such weaponry. That makes us an uncivilized nation. We now have, and will continue to have that reputation in the World until we take a little responsibility for our actions.

By supporting the right for any nut to legally buy and possess such an arsenal, you are just as guilty for the actions of a mass-shooting killer as the killer them self.

I heard once where it takes 15 minutes for the police to respond to a home invasion. In that time, the following is possible...

    Your home has been robbed.
    Your family has been murdered.
    Your spouse has been raped.
    You are executed.

If you had a gun then your response time becomes 15 seconds. If you and your spouse had a gun, drops to around 10 seconds. In that time.

    Your home is safe.
    Your family is safe.
    Your spouse is safe.
    Because the criminal(s) are dead.

I prefer 15 seconds to the15 minutes of freedom for the criminals to do as they please.

We can have freedom and safety. And there is no reason to be carrying, or to be in possession of a gun unless you are part of the military, police force, etc.. At this point, we would be equally as safe if everyone carried a gun, if no one did. If we didn't have guns, this tragic event would not have occurred. (and until same sex marriage is legal in all states; freedom isn't exactly something we can pretend we have)

The problem with your logic there is that, if everyone has a gun then you can expect immediate and DIRE retribution if you pulled yours out to shoot someone in the commission of a crime. With no guns around, then only the criminals will have them and everyone around them become sheep, waiting to be sheared in their eyes.
