As if another battleground was needed over the subject of gay parenting, now the fight has moved into the air. Well, not exactly the air, but the airport anyway.

Thanks to the work of gay-rights supporters, the face of your passport could soon be changing in a way that may strip a bit more of your gender identity.

The State Department has announced that the words “mother” and “father” on U.S. passport applications will now be replaced with the more gender-neutral terms “parent one” and “parent two.” The agency said the change is part of an improvement intended to give a more accurate description of “a child’s parents and in recognition of different types of families.”

While gay parents cheered the news, Christian conservative organizations were quick to pounce on the news and decry the changes.

"Only in the topsy-turvy world of left-wing political correctness could it be considered an 'improvement' for a birth-related document to provide less information about the circumstances of that birth," said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council in a statement.

Perkins, a longtime foe of same-sex marriage, said the gender neutral terms were "designed to advance the causes of same-sex 'marriage' and homosexual parenting without statutory authority, and violates the spirit if not the letter of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)."

He was referring to the 1996 federal law that legally defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The new passport applications will be available online next month.

So, which do you prefer? Mom and dad or “parent one” and “parent two?”

While a lot of comments on here seem to be focusing on how it takes a mother and father to produce a child, that doesn't mean a child needs to have a mother and father. I fully support gay marriage and gay adoption, so it makes perfect sense to me for this change to happen. How else can two people of the same gender fill out a passport that only has the option for mother and father? No matter if you support gay marriage or not, you have to at least admit that there ARE same sex couples out there and it makes no sense at all to call one of them the mother and the other the father.

Now of course I think a better solution would be to allow for the choice of either putting down mother/father or parent 1/ parent 2.

"Choice"? What a commonsensical notion -- the government will NEVER go for it.

it would be wasteful to have two separate sets of passport application sheets printed up to accommodate that though.

True, but it's already wasteful to have changed the app. in the first place. Besides, haven't you heard? "We the People" LOVE paying taxes so the government can screw around with inessentials.

the application as is doesn't apply to everyone though. it makes sense to change it, but not to maintain two separate kinds.

One word -- "Parents" -- with multiple blanks would cover all possibilities.

Why would you need two separate sets? Why not have a little box where you can check off either mother, father, parent, guardian, or whatever term they want. I see no need for different forms. Its not like we currently have different forms for women and different forms for men.

Doesn't it take a male and a female to produce a child? I understand sperm donors and surrogate mothers, but how ridiculous is this! I can see it now...on the birth certificate it'll read Parent 1 - John Smith....Parent 2 - Bill Jones. How about we put all gay issues to vote. Majority rules...the way it should be.

"Democracy is nothing more than mob rule. Where 51 percent of the people can take away the rights of the other 49 percent." - Thomas Jefferson

wait, so you advocate majority rules, and then you follow that with a thomas jefferson quote where he's arguing against majority rules?
  • BrianMe... A sugar... 2011/01/12 04:04:23 (edited)
    BrianMercer
He wasn't arguing against majority rules...he was stating a fact. At least, what used to be a fact.
  • A sugar... BrianMe... 2011/01/12 20:12:22

that quote is literally him saying "mob rule is bad". that is the fact he is stating, and it is in direct opposition to you saying "majority rules...the way it should be"

I mean, if that's what you think, go ahead - but you're using a quote of a guy disagreeing with you.
  • BrianMe... A sugar... 2011/01/12 20:47:03

No...research it...and also look at other things he said. He was all for majority rules. He believed it was the beauty of this country.

"...Where 51 percent of the people can take away the rights of the other 49 percent."

this is not an endorsement. that is a bad thing, when a simple 51-49 vote can take away people's rights.

also, in looking for the context of that quote, I discovered that it's not actually part of jefferson's published work and likely a misattribution - which doesn't change the fact that it is clearly anti-mob rule anyway.
  • BrianMe... A sugar... 2011/01/12 20:57:20
    BrianMercer
See...typical liberal thinking...a simple 51 - 49 vote is a majority and therefore rules. The ideological minority will always fight the majority for special priviliges.

can you really not see the point of that quote? it's saying that majority rules do not make violations of rights okay. your insistence on "majority rules" would legitimize the holocaust, since the majority of germans voting for it would outnumber the minority of jews voting against it.
  • BrianMe... A sugar... 2011/01/12 21:09:14
    BrianMercer
No one is talking about the violation of rights....this is about catering to a groups needs. Having a passport that says Mother and Father DOES NOT violate anyone's rights! You are trying to make it sound like the ideological majority would take away rights...they wouldn't. But the ideological majority should rule. I know you liberals think you know what's best for the majority, but you don't. That's why liberals fight every proposition on ballots...because liberals know what they want won't pass. So, what you try to do is circumvent the majority through the courts. And unfortunately, we have way too many judges that legislate from the bench. Hopefully one day we get back to the principles this country was founded upon.

What about this Thomas Jefferson quote: "All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression."

What he is saying here is that the majority will rule in all cases, and that will to be right must be reasonable. They cannot infringe on the rights of the minority. NO RIGHTS ARE BEING VIOLATED HAVING THE PASSPORT APPLICATION READ MOTHER AND FATHER!

This is only about SPECIAL RECOGNITION...nothing more.

no rights are being violated when it says "parent 1" and "parent 2" either. what's the big deal about changing it to be more broadly applicable?

also, that quote is, again, jefferson saying that majority rule has to tempered with rules to protect the minority. which is different from straight majority rule.
  • BrianMe... A sugar... 2011/01/13 03:12:19
    BrianMercer
Exactly...what's the big deal about changing it? Leave it alone. I notice you're from Luxembourg...figures.

  • A sugar... BrianMe... 2011/01/13 03:19:43

I imagine they're changing it because not everyone has a mother and a father, legally speaking. since that change doesn't infringe on your rights, why are you upset?
  • BrianMe... A sugar... 2011/01/13 03:42:10
    BrianMercer
I'm not upset because it infringes on my rights...it doesn't. What I would like to know is why must homosexuals require this change? It's because they want to be recognized for who they are. Personally I could care less about a person's sexual orientation, however, they don't need to be looking for recognition...they want validation. They are trying to force people to accept their homosexuality. I'm not homosexual so I don't need to accept it. Oh, that's right, if I don't accept it then I'm a ignorant bigot. No, I'm not.

I have a friend with an adopted son. He refers to his birth father as "The Sperm Donor." I think that would look great on an app. It wouldn't solve the "issue" for gay couples, but it would be more fun.

actually, Mother and Father.. there is no such thing as just a "parent".. you are either the Mother or the Father of a child.. or the adoptive mother or father..

but not everyone's legal guardian IS their biological mother and father. How are they supposed to fill out this passport info? Should they be baneed from traveling or obtaining passports? duh

regardless, there should be the name of the mother and the father.. if they aren't the biological or birth parents, then they are the adoptive parents.. there is nothing else.

who ever is the legal parents of the child would be listed as the mother and father.. If there is a legal guardian then they would have to submit papers to prove that.. it doesn't change who the mother and father are.. get a grip.

Um, many people's legal guardians are NOT fathers and mothers. I'm gay and if me and my partner have a child there would be no 'mother' as WE would be the legal guardians... so the form wouldn't WORK. Also many people have aunts and uncles and grandparents as legal guardians.

you and your partner can't HAVE a child.. it takes a woman and a man.. but one of you could adopt the others child.. so you would be the adoptive mother or father.
why don't you get a grip..
  • RLars21 SunShine 2011/01/13 01:29:41
    RLars21
NO, NEITHER of us would be the adopting 'mother'. we're both MEN. DUH. so the form needs to be changed so that our children could get PASSPORTS.
